This is Why We Don't Text & Drive

Check this out - My nephew sent me these - supposedly the driver was "texting" and lost control. Miraculously, no one killed - but one messed up Suburban and the bill from the State had to be huge!

I got that about a month ago, and the story with the pic's sent to me was that the accident occurred north of Deer Lodge on I-90, a 22 year old guy heading east to college who fell asleep at the wheel and drifted off the shoulder hitting the end of the section of guard rail. Regardless, it's amazing he was not hurt, and can you imagine the noise????

SH#T and I'm not one for swearing and really don't care for what story is behind this bit of stupidity but heck if there had been passengers in that vehicle, some one would be in mourning now due to the fact that the drive took his or her eye off the ball. Makes one wonder about the speed that vehicle was travelling at also to be able to not only have the guard rail penetrate up through the vehicle but put a few metres of the rail out the back window.

My message said the guard rail came through the right headlight, engine compartment, firewall, glove box, passenger seat, rear seat and exited out the driver’s side rear window. That is 120 LF of guard rail that threaded through the suburban. Incredibly, the driver was not injured.

Hey Pat that is funny, the poor guard was just resting on it's post on the side of the road minding it's own business when along comes this vehicle that attackes me and then has the check to say I jumped out onto the road and insulted him or her. Heck give me a break.

If he fell asleep at the wheel, I'll bet that woke him up real quick.

Yeah, they went from open ends to burying the ends, but determined that the buried end made a ramp that launched cars over the rail Some have a section of posts and cables before the steel rail, and others have a big square cap on the ends or barrels of sand/water. I agree, hitting the rail should not impale the car like that.

30 years ago good friend of mine lost his leg in a race car, got sideways and hit the end of a guardrail... but that was 30 years ago--thought the people putting them dang things in might have learned something by now...guess not....

I think I read somewhere that the third cause of accidents is being over tired.

Unbelievable the way that rail came through the truck like that. Never seen anything like that. Regardless of the cause of this particular accident, I think they need to ban all cell phone use and texting while driving. Make it such a stiff fine people are forced to pull over to do it.

That's amazing. I agree, that thing should not have gone through that car that way, but should have deflected it and directed it to rub off some speed on the rail. I've seen them with the ends turned down (good ramp), saw one somewhere where the end was like a coiled spring about the size of a 55 gal. drum. Seems that for every design they come up with, some accident will make an exception of/to it; cars running into things is just too unpredictable, I think.

I agree with Don: texting and "non-hands free" phone use while driving should be against the law. Might as well drive with a blindfold on.

They did make it illegal to use hand held cell phones in Oregon, but I still see people using them all the time. hard to catch offenders that know their doing something illegal, but perhaps the law still helps save lives because it keeps people using them more aware of their surrounding as they scan to see if any police are around.
