What was surprising was that a lot of those cars were brand new or almost new when they were dropped off at some Kustom Shop and modified. We tend to think guys back then were reworking not so new cars, but that wasn't always the case.

BTW, The Father of Gastrick on here just picked up a VERY cool 51 Merc that is done right. They are going to make a few changes to make it their own, but I hear they haven't been able to get Bill Sr out of the car since he got it. I don't blame him.

The guy who has that site gives proper credit to Rik Hoving for many of the pictures. If you like this stuff, go to Hoving's site for more: http://www.rikhovingkustoms.com/RHK1...o_Archive.html

I was just reminded of this one this morning, gorgeous barge built by Joe Wilhelm...

Thanks Ken, that's a great site. I've always loved the early custom style(late 40's thru early 50's.

Here's a couple of pics of my old 40 Merc that i had in the 70's. One of the cars i wish I had back.

'40 Fords are difficult to customize well because the original is so right. Cushenberry was able to do it with the El Matador, few others have been successful.

I'll tell ya fella's..... these are my kinda cars. I think that the 50s and 60s custom cars are the best ever. The radical fabrication of those days was hard to beat. Long live the 50s and rock and roll.
