Bob is right (as he usually is ), it is a rear view camera used to keep an eye on the trailer. It was the trailer that originally caught my eye, as we were walking by I overheard someone saying that the owner built the trailer from scratch. The workmanship on the trailer was outstanding and when I noticed what looked like a pickup bed stuffed in the trunk of the coupe I naturally assumed he had worked his magic there as well. It wasn't until that fall when I saw it again at the Tampa Nats that I learned it was built that way at the factory by Chevy.

It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.

Luck occurs when preparation and opportunity converge.

I had assumed it was a camera but man that thing is an eye sore (although I admit I didn't notice until my second look at the pics) . At least it serves a purpose.

Here's a picture of my 1956 El Camino I built in the early 70s.

It's setting in a car lot.... I traded it even up for a Model A pickup in a basket.

Notice the 57 Chevy head lights.... they didn't rust out as bad as the 56 did.
