Word is getting around!
I have always been mad about the fact that drag racing doesn't get the news coverage it deserves. Sometimes you might find results of a big event in a newspaper in tiny print down in a remote corner of the sports section, but that would be it.
If somebody at a drag meet ran in the two's at 350 mph they would probably not get mentioned. You could probably read more about the Iditerod Dogsled Races in Alaska than about drag racing.
Anyway, our daughter lives and works in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and we just returned from a visit with her. While there we took a drive to Abu Dhabi which is another oil-rich state.
I had always wanted to go to Abu Dhabi because I like the sound of the name (I also wanted to go to Timbuktu and Vladivostok for the same reason).
Well, we went into a really fancy big mall to find some lunch, and in the big middle of the entry area was this lighted display. It was about eight feet tall and was promoting an event at a big Formula 1 racecourse they have. I don't know whose blue car that is.
Since I don't exactly understand Arabic I had to get an interpreter to read me the writing at the top. It says "Feel The Heat".
Yep, In the desert. Close to the Persian Gulf.
I feel better now.

The maddest I've ever been about this topic was when I was growing up in Danville, Illinois. We were 90 miles from Indy... but never a word about the Nationals!!!
Then one day it happened! A great big picture of a cameraman getting killed by a cartwheeling blower, that had been tossed off of a car about mid track! You can be sure they heard from me! }:-(

You got that in one...The only time drag racing or almost any motorsport gets featured in New Zealand,is if a car goes tits up,or something special is coming to town..like the Aussies coming over for our nostalgia drags...which are on April 3..
Hey,big tracks,,next time you go over there,,hunt down the Burger Fuel store,,its a Kiwi franchise,,and you might find something else worth lookin at in there...Last edited by lamin8r; 03-07-2011 at 04:44 PM.

I work over here in Qatar and we just had the season finals. My first thoughts were drags in this place yea right. Well come to find out the with all that money they have here they spared no expense. The track is nice and the racing was very good. I mean there is nothing like the smell nitrous and burning rubber is there. As Hoss stated the Al Anabi racing team were in full colors and did a hell of a job. We had a blast this season over here. BTW I am heading home tomorrow for my leave. Plan on doing the Goodguy's in Dallas anybody going ?Last edited by buzz4041; 03-07-2011 at 07:17 PM.

Then you must have missed the 1st year, 1961. Sunday night there was a near riot at the spot in the road called Clermont. Seems as though the folks occupying the camping grounds ran out of beer and didn't realize that Indiana is dry on Sundays, or at that time it was, I don't know about today. Anyway they showed their displeasure by hassling every car that came through the intersection and at that time there was a drive in movie right across the road from IRP. My buddies and I made it out just as the cops were arriving. From what I understand a couple of Sheriffs offices, the Indianapolis city police and the Indiana state highway patrol were in attendance with a couple of buses to haul off the "rioters". It was a fun night to say the least.Ken Thomas

I was in a bar once and mentioned I liked Drag.....
the guy next to me said "Me too hunny"
after that I kept my drag racing interest to myself.
A "skip" = a dumpster.... but he says it's proper english??? Oh.. Okay. Most of us can see the dating site pun, "matching" with an arsonist.. But a "SKIP? How is that a box? It must all be...
