    GM One wire Alt. Conversion

Do you guys know which of the two wires on the side plug that has to be jumpered over to the 12 volt battery power to make a poor man's one wire conversion?

My custom chrome plated one wire unit on the T failed yesterday. I have another alt. that is good but it is a standard set up with the required plug on the side.

I heard you can jumper one of the two wires to make it go.

The T now only has the one main feed to the rear post, so I don't have the other standard wires needed to set up the stock style GM harness.

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

My setup is all weird like, I think the 2 wires come out of the alternator, the join together, split back into two wires, and then screw into some stuff on my firewall. I'm not sure what's on the other side though. My original wire exploded, so I made a new one by copying the old one. Everything works great now. 3 wire alternators are better than one wires, so you're better off switching anyways.

I never really heard such bad stuff before about the one wire.

Okay...So, I checked out those links, but found myself still searching for an answer.

I can easliy buy a three wire replacement and swap the case (mine is chrome). However, I don't know for sure what to connect the two other plugs to (ignition on, etc).

The fellow at that one site wants to sell a wire kit. I don't have time, as I need the car running by this weekend. Gotta get this worked out over the next couple of days in my few hours after work.

Ya got a chev fuse block in your T?

Your altenator got a internal regulator (after 1972)?

If so, the post is 12V battery sorce

The #1 stab goes to your alt excitor on your fuse block.

The #2 stab is a short jumper connected to the 12V post on your alt.

Thats what I remember bout Chevy 3 wire Alts, I also got a single wire Alt (Chromed) I hope mine don"t fail.

Any-one else agree with this wiring? It's been a while but I think thats it.

It had an external voltage regulator in there before, and the harness was junk. I yanked the harness and built my own from a five fuse panel deal.

So........., I don't have the "exciter" etc, wire anymore.

I am sure I can figure out how to add this back.

So the "field" is just looped back to the battery terminal? Then the other one is the "exciter" wire. Does that mean it comes on only when the key is on?

I would think the excitor would draw off of the same cicuit that engages the starter much like a ballast resistor bypass? I would also think the field would be controlled by the voltage regulator so it must go to the voltage regulator. If there is an internal regulator, I don't see why field wouldn't just go to the batter.

    Fixed!

I decided to hook it up as a three wire.

    Bought a $24 replacement unit.

I talked to Painless Wiring today.

I ran a battery loop to terminal 2. I ran a ignition on with a radio shack capacitor in terminal 1.

Batta Bing...batta boom, it charges again!!!!!!!!!!

run a 12 ga. wire from the big post on the back of the alt to the #2 wire in the top of the alt, these wires are hot all of the time i think some might have a "B" on it also. the third wire goes to the ign. switch but you dont need that.

Chris, lectriclimited sell an adapter wire to convert to a 1-wire. 67Heaven used it on one of the forums.
