Does it matter how big the shrinking disc is? I've seen 4" & 9" available. I only have a 4" angle grinder....will the 4" disc be big enough for what it needs to do on my lid?

During my internet 'wanders' I saw where someone had made a shrinking disc out of common pieces of steel. While not as glamorous as the $50 version, will work well. There are a bunch of threads if you Google.
And for once Randy, trying to SAVE you $$$ instead of the usualDave W

As Dave said home made will work , you are really just creating heat thru friction , so a home made one would be fine . Dave I like that idea myself . The stainless is just harder and won't wear as bad is all I would think .

Bobby - after I 'penned' my response to Randy, I removed a worn out solid edge 7" saw blade from my tile saw and may just see if I can make that into a shrinking disc. There is still a tiny bit diamond grit on the edge, but it may come loose with some heat and may anneal the disc enough to be dished a little bit. Low on my list of things to do though :-/Dave W

Hey Randy I think I am right behind you a few cars on the coaster !! Work is going to implement a AWS which is a alternative work schedule , would mean working a 3 day week at 12 hours a day . The next week a 4 day at 10 hour days . Talk about screwing up a pattern , they say it gives us off a total of 76 more days a year . That only means the company doesn't have to pay overtime anymore .
Also means family time gets stepped on when you have to work every other week end . Also down side is a lot of toy cash slips away .
We are all working on how the brakes will work on this ride thru the trials .

Bobby, I'm thinking that even with your new work schedule you'll still be ahead of me on progress.I haven't had a chance to get out to the garage for a few days but I'm still contemplating how I'm gonna make a shrinking disc from something I have laying around. We'll see what happens....

Randy I haven't hit the car in a few weeks .Spring time chores caught up with me .
We may be running side by side on these. I did get the Centari to cut in pre assembly painting though .
While there I was parked in the street inside looking at all the eye candy and some one drove by smashing the drivers mirror on my truck .. One more job I have to get done , sure is hard to see thru duct tape
