Probably going to have to take it apart to get really permanent repairs done to it. Can't see a lot of details on the edge where the inner and outer skin come together, but even from these pics you can see that there is going to be some rust issues under the bracing along the edges......Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Ok, so here's what I have.
This is the bottom right corner eaten away...

The underside of the bottom right corner - heavily pitted but not rusted through...
IMAG1294_1.jpg
The top side of bottom right corner - also heavily pitted
IMAG1290_1.jpg
This is the lower edge left of center....
IMAG1289_1.jpg
This is the lower left inside....definite rust through...

Moving on to pics of the top edge....
Here's the top edge - obviously the bondo is chipping away...
IMAG1283_1.jpg
This is the under side that same area above. There has been some repair here in the past.
IMAG1292_1.jpg
Close up of the same area.
IMAG1297_1.jpg
There is some cracking on the underside of the hinge hole
IMAG1293_1.jpg
A little grinding revealed a skim coat of bondo over at least 90% of the surface.
IMAG1300_1.jpg
For the record, I didn't expect perfection from a 75 year old used trunk lid but I did expect the seller to be more honest in the assessment of it's condition. He repeatedly said, "No rust, No dents, No bondo." I tend to take people at the word unless the give me reason to believe otherwise. I have another friend who says all sellers are liars.....
Now, in an effort to make "lemonade" I would appreciate suggestions on ways to effectively repair this within my skill set...."It is not much good thinking of a thing unless you think it out." - H.G. Wells

Oh, here's one more shot of the underside with the insulation removed. The rust you see in those areas is mostly surface rust.IMAG1301_1.JPG"It is not much good thinking of a thing unless you think it out." - H.G. Wells

Sorry to see this Randy. Can you use part(s) of this one to patch in the old one? I've seen your talents, you can do this! I think your better at it than I am!

Thanks for the encouraging words, Mike! I'm sure I can figure it out. It's just that the main reason for buying another lid was to save some time, money & hassle over repairing the old one. Obviously, that's not going to happen. When selling something, I'm all for presenting the item in the most positive way but when that "positive presentation" parts company with the "truth", I have a problem with that!! That's one of the challenges of buying used parts on line from a picture. All my future online purchases will require many more pictures, more questions and more direct communication!"It is not much good thinking of a thing unless you think it out." - H.G. Wells

Seems these days that few are satisfied with giving the truth about the items they have for sale, they have to 'embellish' them way too much. So many rip offs operating on line these days it's just really taking a big chance to do business with anyone. Just a dang shame, I like to get rid of my extra's in hopes that they might help somebody with their project. Too many trying to sell junk at an inflated price just to make a buck. Lots of good, honest people in the Hot Roddin' world, too bad these scammers have to come along and screw things up!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

I hear ya, Dave! Hey, I see you have a Carroll Shelby quote in your signature. I got to meet his wife today. A friend let me sneak into a car show event at the Belair Country Club which was being hosted by the Shelby's. Mrs Shelby arrived in her shiny new black Mustang Shelby GT 500 (the one with 1000hp!). Yes, she drives a stick!! Really nice lady. Carroll was going to be arriving at the event later but I wasn't able to stay that long. Would have been great to meet a living legend."It is not much good thinking of a thing unless you think it out." - H.G. Wells

I've been fortunate enough to meet up with him a few times in the past, he's one heck of a guy to just sit an listen to! His background in road racing was a successful career in itself, but to then go on from there to build the Cobra and the GT40, and head up the racing effort with them both here and in Europe is truly phenomenal! One of his main reasons for getting into building the GT40's and take them to LeMans was to show Enzo Ferrari that a race car could be both fast and safe. In the 60's Ferrari was famous for having no regard for driver safety at all, kill one today, hire his replacement tomorrow. Shelby turned down offers to drive for Ferrari twice, then got hooked up with the boys at Ford and the rest, as they say, is history!!!!!
My first ever meeting with Mr. Shelby was in probably '73 at an SCCA event in College Station, Tx., he dropped in for a visit on Test and Tune day, Friday. My boss was campaigning one of the ex-Bolus and Snopes Shelby's. Carrol walked up and told us everything we had wrong and right on the car, then proceeded to give us a 15 minute history lesson on this car and a lot of the other big block Shelby's that were successful race cars. We set the car up per his "suggestions" then proceeded to set fast time, win class, and a 2nd overall on Saturday!!!!! He's probably forgotten more about chassis and suspension set-up then the rest of us will ever know!!!!!
He's quite a guy, doubt there will ever be another one like him!!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Randy even the pics to me looked so good , the seller choked back what was really there . Ask for some back just to see what he will say .
But you have the skill and plenty of 37 material to build a fine lid the the hump .
We work hard to locate a nice usable piece and so many make it it out as being the Queens In Quality , you get it and its so much less like 70% less then was expected ,
Rhandy I feel bad the blur pic looked so much better , just not enough of them .

Hey Bobby, yeah, I sent the seller a couple of emails expressing my disappointment with what he said vs what I got. He gave a lame response the he really didn't look at it that close. What a bonehead! He couldn't help but see it unless he's blind!! Oh well, so much for my efforts to save some time & money repairing the old one. I guess I have to view this as an opportunity to practice some new metal-working skills!
Like I said earlier in the thread, all future online purchases will require many more pics and answers to many more questions! Please remind me of that if I start to get anxious to make a purchase...."It is not much good thinking of a thing unless you think it out." - H.G. Wells

Did you pay the guy through Paypal? You should be able to file a claim on him for it. especially seeing how it's not near how he described it. Any way, can you use the inner structure from this rusty one, and the outer skin from yours and make one?Ryan
