This morning I blew a lot of dirt and debris off the 354. I removed the stock intake because I have no need for it right now. I also bolted on the 392 water cross over I got last year for it. I also test fitted a distributor I got about 3 years ago that I thought wouldn't fit. Turns out, it fits just fine. It is a new HEI style and I only have to get a drive coupler for it so it will be a drop in replacement.
This morning I cleaned my edges and ground on a bevel on the edges of the rails. Then fit each frame rail and measured and clamped each one on. Tacked them on, took more measurements, and then welded them on. I then put my make shift dolly under the back of the frame and the engine hoist up front. I drug the car outside, covered the front of the body with plastic, and soda blasted the inside portions of the new rails that were the worst. It was pretty nice out. It is in the high 40s now. Darn nice for January! I'm going to get some rust converter paint and paint the inside to help seal them up. I might use weld through primer since I will be welding the boxing plates on. That might be better than a regular paint. The last pic is just showing the weld from the back side. Full penetration.Ryan

That's great progress, nice to see it moving ahead again.
Do you intend to add any plating over your weld joint?

Yes, I'm going to make a sleeve, like a [ , and plug weld and end weld it where I can. I was going to put the parts of the original x member pieces back in the front part as well. But I'm thinking they won't do much except add some weight since I am boxing the frame any how. I haven't decided if I will need to plate the outer part yet or not. I wouldn't think it would need it but I'm open to advice.Ryan

I think I would plate the outside and make the plate in the shape of a diamond. This is much lighter duty but on loader frames and truck frames, a square plate or a vertical weld will develop a vertical crack right next to the original weld.

Times 3. You could even do a "more decorative" shape just to dress it out. It will add structure / strength and help carry any flex load.

I think I'm going to do a flat plate with a fish mouth on each end. I didn't have time to mess with it today. Maybe next week.Ryan

No real pic worthy progress on the 40. I marked out the inner lips of the 38 rails and started making new boxing plates for the inside. I dug out my welder series cross member and started getting things ready for when it's time to install that. I've got to finish a huge PITA truck before I get to work on this much more.Ryan

Hey Bud, you made some progress and now seems you have a goal to work towards, don't sweat it... it'll come together. It should look sweet on the "TOUR"!

I have a lot of people on bookface thinking I'm putting a 7.3 in it. It's pretty funny.Ryan

I've been collecting some parts for the engine. I had 0 small cfm carbs laying around, but did manage to get 2 600 cores, and 1 390. I'm searching for one more. Anyone have any 8007 Holleys they want to sell?
I did get the new to it front frame rail inner lips trimmed. I also cut out the boxing plates for the front too. I cut out the gussets for the outside of the frame also. I might just take Sunday off from working on trucks to work on it. Everyone needs some time off right?Ryan
