On the registration you really need to research the NM laws and local practices before you go too far. Around here swapping a VIN tag to use the title from a different car can be classified as fraud and can get you in a heap of trouble (I think it can be a felony if they want to press it, and can get the car impounded for sure). Our local DMV looks close at the type of fastener on the VIN plate, comparing back to records of what the OEM used and checking for any matching numbers, like on the frame, etc. A friend had a vintage '51 Packard that had never been touched, and they accused him of swapping the VIN plate - turned out that the factory used two different rivets in that era, but the gal doing the inspection did not take time to check that fact. No disrespect to anyone, but the point is local practice rules, and what works in Kansas, Missouri, or any other state is not really of any value in your NM process. Do your homework before you head down a path toward a mess. Just my $0.02 on the process.
