1969 Mercury Cougar Convertible
Well its a long story so I will shorten it . A guy I work with has been wanting me to take this car so he may see it on the road again . It's has all the major rust and work from a field car , but has been inside for almost 30 years in Indiana .
Engine running after 30 years a 351 W - 4 brl - M code

He never said it was a convertible , so when I went to see it I said yes . He said 1k I paid $750 for it .
He purchased the car in 1978 for 1K for his wife at the time . They drove it and had a couple dingies with it . They sought a guy who worked on the side and after many years of nothing being done brought it back home .
So here it is at it's present state .
I did get it running with a new set of points .

Now the best part of the rose here I went to look at a fender for it and the guys buys and sells parts just from Cougars . He coaxed me a little to buy this California car CHEAP since I was saving the vert .
I will section a lot of this rebuild so it goes a little faster between the others .
Album of the California Coupe even with most of the emissions attached . I can make a little cash back there .
The 70 Cougar XR-7 for parts has no title .
Rest of the album have never had a car this clean , wish it had a title to save it .
Click the slide show you can zoom with the small magnifying glass in both albums .

I don't know, Bobby--looks like lots of time and money to go into the Cougar....I think you should just give it to me and save yourself all that expense????Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

I'm with Randy! I'm glad you're giving the Cougar it's own thread, it'll be fun to watch the transformation.

Yeah I think this will move in front of the 37 some what , Since the Cali is so clean a rear clip and full floor boards will save a lot of time in assembly .

Reminds me of the california special I saw on the highway on our way back from my wife's Mom's funeral. Lovely style to those cars!" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

Robin I would love to build the coupe but the fun of a drop top is more intriguing , and the upside is Verts are the more sought after car except for the coupe being a XR-7 .
Guys still have to finish and paint 2 . I have tumbled the thought I know I am selling the Mustang and most likely the 31 . Then I can devote much more time to the other 2 .

Great project!
Could you make an XR7 clone out of the convertible, using parts from the coupe?

Any convertable of that lineage should get some immediate attention. With the 351, it is a very nice setup. Your photos of the inside didn't seem too bad. It seemes the gauges are intact, and the seats not too bad for reupholstery. I was amazed also to see the original air cleaner setup, with the ducting and all still there. The unibody cancer on the seems would throw me for a loop in the repair department. Just not skilled enough to do it, but a little research and some of the body sheet metal guys I'm sure would help if you need it. Dave seems to be fearless in this area! All in all, I think you scored big time. Love those stangs, and the cougars too. Never saw that many of the cougars growing up, which makes it even more special to me." Yeah went out and put the drive shaft in . A few tries cranking it over I lose the starter AAAHHH . Going on vacation to AZ. in the morning will not get back till Saturday . But come Sunday morning some one better have a stater and solenoid for it .
The body will go super quick since I am going to clip in the coupe parts for all the substructure . But believe me I will be here picking on the Sheet metal Masters if I get stuck some where . I will how ever have to use Mustang Convertible sheet metal then redo the original inner cougar rocker to fit the shorter seat pans .
5 different drive shafts for the 69 cougar depending on engine and trans combo .
Here is the universal I thought I was going to get to idle around the block some LOL

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
