I may not be reading your replies the way you mean them------------
But, your answer that its a new carb does not answer the question I asked----
it probably idles at 1400 because of a high idle cam for while the choke is engaged--
then, after the choke is off, is the throttle plates closing completely or are they open some???????????????? After you explain those 2 items, we can continue to solve your issues------------
and--------was the electric choke kit added to this carb or was it stock that way????????(improper install)

sorry, Jerry, it was probably my verbal stumbling but when you said "too much wear" I assumed that you didn't know it was a new carb
I added the electric choke kit myself and it ?seems? to be working fine - - - I will check the throttle plates in the morning to see if they are closed completely - - - however, I DO have a vacuum leak at the gasket at the base of the carb so I would think that I need to address that before "we continue" with anything else - - - thanks again.

wonder if she knows anything about Motorcraft carb gasket leaking?
she can bend on my engine bay any time she wants to
still locating a couple more gaskets here in Yuppieville and then I'll be ready to install again and hopefully it won't leak this time - - - bucket's getting full.

Em, when you put it back together tighten your carb bolts in a couple of stages using a cross (X) pattern. Snug them, then go around again to around 50 to 60 inch pounds, then do a final to the recommended torque. I've seen values of 100 to 110 inch pounds on some carbs, and others for 140 to 150 inch pounds. You definitely don't want to "honk down" on them or you can warp the carb base. If you don't have an inch pound torque wrench, 100 inch pounds is only an 8.3 pound pull on a 12" ratchet handle (100/12 = 8.33), and it's easy to over torque.Last edited by rspears; 06-13-2013 at 05:32 AM.

Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.

I'm using a 1/2" snubby open/closed end wrench and don't have a torque wrench - - - couldn't get a socket on but 2 nuts anyhow - - - I need to locate some more gaskets or order some online - - - NAPA is a good shop but out of the 5 items I had them order yesterday they only got 1 correct and I need at least 2 more in case I double those paper thin gaskets. thanks, Roger.

I am very sad to post that Mike Frade, Screen Name 34_40, passed away suddenly yesterday, April 4th, 2025, at home in New Mexico. Mike's wife Christine shared that Mike had come in from working in...
