The 312 is from the family of engines known as Y blocks. They came in various sizes; 239, 272, 292, and 312. They were the first overhead valve V8 for Ford, began production for the 1954 model year. As I recall, their last year in passenger cars was 1962, not sure if it was the same for trucks. Yes, they did have the distributor in the rear. Other visable features different than the later years; two bolts through the top of the rocker covers for hold down, siamesed center exhaust ports. As their 9 year production run would imply, the design wasn't very "state of the art" at it's introduction, so passed rather quickly to be supplanted by the engine we've come to know as the "small block"; 221, 260, 289, 302, 351 from the Windsor family (not to be confused with British royalty )Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon
