36 pontiac
Can anyone tell me why you don't see many 36 Pontiac Hot Rods. I saw a picture of one( Bus. Coupe) and thought it would make a good Rod, but when I looked around for more pictures of them I did'nt find many. Are they considered an ugly duck because of the funky grill?

Thanks everyone for all the info!
The pic I saw was a 3 window coupe. Given the parameters of finding one in a field to one that still drives, what could I expect to pay.
If I sound like a "newbie" your correct. I have a friend that builds Rods and have helped him over the years with showing his car (35 Flatback Sedan) but now I'd like to build one for myself. My friend has given me his thoughts and I value them, but I'm looking for more than one opinion.
Thanks again for your help!

You may find it hard to get a '36 Pontiac cause most are restored. A good first hot rod ( I think ) would be a T Bucket, just because they seem simple to build, now I have never built a T but, I do know that there is a kit for a bolt up kit ( minus engine, interior and few other things ) that a company makes, located at www.tperformance.com and it is yes a kit but, if you do not have the access to the tools or the expertise to build it the old way, this is right up ur alley, they also sell the bodies, interior and everything else to build them besides the paint. The kit comes with a body and frame but, if you wanted to build your T without a kit, they sell all parts. Now u can pick up just about any old car ( 1930's-1949 ) and rod that. You don't know what you've got til it's gone

A '36 Pontiac Coupe is a really unique car to have as a street rod.
I have one, and love the fact that it doesn't look like all the Fords and Chevys out there...no offense to those who have Fords or Chevys. (We've got a '36 Ford Cabriolet here and my first car was a '36 Chevy 4 door....still have that one around here somewhere too.)
I've been to the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, KY with my car two years in a row. As far as I can find, there was only one other business coupe there. A couple of other '36 Pontiacs were there, but only one other of the business coupe.
Go for it!

I think Tech pretty much hit it on the head, it's a question of availability.
While some builder/buyers will hold out for a certain make and model other will see something that's for sale and think what a great project. The reason I have the 3 projects I'm currently building/collecting parts might be a good example of buying mentality.
57 Plymouth: A lot of people consider these cars (especially the non-Fury's) to be Butt ugly. I have a soft spot for them because my folks had one when I was a kid. I spent 7 years actively looking for one for before I found one that was worth building and I could afford.
64 Ford Custom: I had built a neat tri-power FE stroker for a 61 T-Bird I owned and then sold the car before I installed the engine. I spent about 6 months looking for a Ford body that would hold the engine and that I liked. I found this orphan in a junk-yard and bought it.
37 Dodge PU: I wasn't even looking for anything when I found this. The price was right and I bought it on the spot. It wouldn't have mattered to me if it had been a Ford or a Chevy of similiar age, condition and price, I still would have bought it.
As far as what is neat or ugle that is in the eye of the beholder. I have seen cars put together that I would never consider for a build that have turned out as real show stoppers. It all depends on the vision of the guy who puts it together.

Thanks for the insight Guys, I passed on the 36 Pontiac( turned out to be a rust bucket and the seller would not deal)
I did find a 39 Buick 2dr Bus Coupe that I did buy. It is an original 60's hot rod that had been stored since 68. The car is rust free and straight as an arrow. Has a .030 over 283 SBC, Dunstoff(sp) 30/30 solid lifter cam, and a Saginaw 3spd. The interior is Blk&Wht tuck & roll, all the garnish molding have been chromed. The dash has a 58 Corvette speedo. and instruments, very nicely done( no hack job ). Almost forgot, the headers go through the fender wells and can be uncapped.
The old owner thought the engine was frozen up from sitting but when I got the car delivered to my shop it turned out to be the water pump only, and I had the car running within 2 hours, after sitting 36 years
Thanks Again Norm

The 36 shape is distinct. Here is a picture of a 36 I built in 1992. Certainly was a bit different from the norm, but who cares what ya build if you love it YOU love it!
