Not much different than a lot of guys I see, including me! No matter how good of a plan I lay out for a build, somewhere along the lines it seems to take on a life of it's own. Then it's all over except for trying to keep the checkbook balanced
Great story, BTW. Looking forward to the rest of it.Mike

Roger's suggestion might work, but Fastenal might be in a period of chaos. I bought a transmission from a guy in Nebraska a few weeks back and we agreed to do the Fastenal thing for the best rate. He went to their site to get a rate and that was what I sent with my payment. Then the fun began. Not sure if it's nationwide, but the outlet near me is will call only now, no walk in trade. His store is that way too. Seems like a cost cutting measure. Then he tried to schedule the drop off and transfer routing and that's where it ended. After a week of trying and three follow ups with no reply he just bit the bullet and sent it to me UPS with the additional cost out of his own pocket. It ended well but not without frustration. Still, give it a shot, that might have just been a hole in time............or they may be suffering the pitfalls falling on a lot of businesses these days.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

Could be worth checking Fastenal, I've heard it's reasonable but the few times I got a quote it was not.Seth

".........Hopefully he isn't like me and wanting to change his mind every other month........."
At least he's got some time to let the ideas "ferment" for a while as your collecting parts......what he thinks he wants the car to be now will probably go thru a lot of changes before any major work starts.
.I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....

On the Fastenal idea, Uncle Bob is likely on target. I broke the "Never ASSUME" rule and figured that by now their No Walk In/Will Call Only policy had been lifted by now, but it may not be the case. I checked my local store's on-line site and it clearly says in red font, "This location is a Fulfillment Center with limited will-call hours and not open for walk-in business." I'd say that the Fastenal option is dead, a victim of Covid19 and our continuing Supply Side problems.
Sedalia is a two hour drive from here, and me picking it up would be moving it two hours farther away from you which makes no sense. Hopefully he will hang on to it for you, and not "forget" and sell it to someone else that comes looking for one.... You're gonna have to weigh the cost of round trip fuel against UPS or FedEx. Wait!! You work for FedEx! Can't you arrange a local pickup and multiple hand-offs truck to truck to get it to your shop??Last edited by rspears; 05-28-2023 at 10:30 AM.

I tried using fastenal a couple of months ago and they pretty much acted like they wanted nothing to do with the 3pl or 3rd party shipping program. Sad deal because half my parts for the camaro, and several sets of truck wheels and truck body parts I've sent through them in the past.
There's a 4 door 39 olds for sale in Eldon, MO. Maybe get the fender and a parts car if the guy will come down in price.
I think for now we will put all the sheet metal on the more original one. We will probably take the engine and trans out and try to sell them. We might give the car a krylon overhaul just because and he can see a change in it. The current plan is go with an LS and a chevy T5 5 speed I took in on trade. But, we have plenty of time. I say that but the time sure flies by.Ryan

Colt and I finally unloaded his cars off the trailer. We have to go get more hay which is earlier that usual but with every where having bad droughts, you have to buy nag feed while you can. Luckily I don't own them.
As we were unloading the cars, Colt was trying to decide which car he wanted to build. The one on the back has no floors. The frame has had a G body stub put on the front and it has ladder bar 8.5 10 bolt from a Trans Am. All the frame work looks good with nice welds and no bad butchery. I told Colt if it were me, I would use the back car. Build new floors and body mounts, and you're over half way on the build. Use the front car for hardware, window regulators, dash parts, garnish moldings, etc. He was really depressed before the talk but he is excited again. He has been saving money and wants to buy some tail lights for it and go from there. I can see this car low but not slammed and gloss black. We'll see what color he wants it to be.Ryan

Who are the late 30's GM experts here?
I'm not even going to pretend like I know because I don't. I've never had any coupes from the late 30s or even the early 40s. Can anyone tell me if all the 38-42? Chevy/Pontiac/Buick/Oldsmobile/Cadillac coupe roof lines are the same?
Finding deck lids seems really hard to find. On the fords of the same year ranges, the front doors are four door car doors. On these GM's that isn't the case. The doors are coupe specific. I've found a 39 Cadillac in Indiana I'd consider buying but only if I can use parts off it for our oldsmobiles. The deck lid is the main piece I'd like.Ryan

After comparing the olds windshield area to the Cadillac, it really looks like the Cadillac's windshield is taller but I don't know if that is because the roof looks smashed on the caddy?
Below is a 39 chevy coupe. The 2nd pic shows the 39 next to 2 37s. You can see the roof is definitely different on the 37s. In 38 they changed it and made the side windows behind the doors longer. The roof on the 38-4? looks more like a bubble where the 37 and earlier looks more like a slope imo.
Does anyone know when the roof line actually changes on them in the 40s? 1941s still look like the same roof as a 39 to me but I am not certain.Last edited by 40FordDeluxe; 07-28-2023 at 05:18 AM.

A '40 Chev coupe roof might be similar enough to the '39 but the '41 is very different, quite a bit more slope to the back light and longer at the belt line.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon
