There were 40,493 standard Ranch wagons and 43,671 customline Ranch wagons made in 1955. Thats a fair amount of ranch's considering Ford made only 626,250 cars that year in the U.S.
I guess you really cant determine rarity by how many were made, but by how many still exist. Ive only seen a handfull in maybe the last decade.
BTW... your idea of going for the flatblack/no gloss, flamed, whitewalled and moon disced look sounds like a great idea."its better to rule in hell, than serve in heaven."

I've got a buddy who has a 55 Ford Custom Wagon in red and white, he found in a barn and it still had the plastic / vinyl on the seats, no sh-t.
It has Thunderbird running gear and Thunderbird flags on the front fenders, now that's rare. I was told they only made 200 with the T-Bird running gear. He uses it to tow his dragster back to the pits after a run. He won't tell anyone what he paid for it, but I'm sure he got it for a song. That's his '32 / 5 window on the left.

I saw a nice 2 door wagon in a junkyard last year. It was in good shape but missing the engine, trans and hood. I asked about it but it was already sold. It's probably someones project now. It should show up at a car show around here. I should have tracked down the owner because I have a spare 55 hood.
I doubt that only 200 wagons had a T-bird engine. You could get any engine you wanted in 55 and the T-bird engine was very popular at the time.
Here's a 55 Ford ad I found in an old National Geographic.Last edited by The Al Show; 04-28-2004 at 04:59 PM.
