    Question 39 ford p.u. 302 engine

I'm installing a 1991 Lincoln 302 w/overdrive trans. in a 1939 Ford p.u. I've installed a Mustang II suspension in the original frame and am now trying to figure out how to lower the engine about 2 to 3 inches, which is being prevented by the stock oil pan that sits at the front, right on top of the suspension crossmember. I pondered a different oil pan but after doing a little research maybe this is not the best solution. The only other idea I can come up with that might make some sense is using a dry sump system. I need to keep the engine in the location that it's in, front to rear, because of leg room in the rear and radiator clearance it the front. Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome. This is my first Ford to Ford conversion and now I'm learning why people use Chevys but I've gone too far at this point to revert to Chevy.

Not exactly sure what your setup looks like, but I think I might continue to explore a different oil pan. If your suspension is set up like the 37 Dodge PU I had there should be room for a rear sump pan and pickup like used on some of the late 60's thru 70's Ford trucks and vans.

There are several ways you can go on this. Check out the oil pan from a V-8 Explorer/Mountaineer, I believe it's a rear sump design. Another choice is Canton, I think they makes a shallow twin sump area pan for the 302. Since Mustang II's had a 302 from the factory you may be able to use an OE design pan also.

Unfortunatly (for this application) the Mustang II pans are front sump and the 302 Fox body cars use a dual sump pan.
I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....

I think the pan from a 91 lincoln has the double sump with the dual drain plugs and if you can find a pan fron a van or truck,it will have a more like a rear sump pan and should give you a little more room to drop the motor.

If you can't find the Explorer to canibalize, Ford Racing makes a complete kit with pan, and pickup to convert to rear sump. Since you didn't say why you think it's a bad idea we're left to guess, but nearly everyone who does a SBF in these Ford chassis uses the rear sump rather than the more complex, and expensive, dry sump.
