    Starter rods

I went to a hot rod/motorcycle show this weekend...And the hot rods there wernt glamered up fancy things they were flat black old beat up but cool as hell loud cars...I love the whole vibe i picked up from that whole thing but I dont know where to go to learn anything about it!

I love the look of the ford fairlanes, and corvairs...what other cars out there are simular? Im 16 so my knowledge of cars is pretty limited...What cars can i find cheap? where should i look?

Im a curious kid and open to anything you guys can tell me!

What your describing are rat rods but, if there in primer, there nicer than most other rat rods which are rusty cars, driven with sometimes nice shiney engines but often times not, most ither have inadaquate brakes or none at all. Most of these cars would not pass inspection and are not legal. The fairlanes can be pricey but the Chevy corvairs are not, I'v seen variouse corvairs go for less than a grand in running condition but need work. If it were me, I'd just get somthing like a corvaire or other that you like and find cheap then, do all bodywork and drivetrain/suspension mods and then instead of putting nice paint on it, just finish it off with black or grey primer. The loud exzaust is nice but the sound police don't like it so, instead of running headders and str8 pipes or zoomies/weedburners ( that have no baffeling ), run dual exzaust with Thrush Magnum glasspacks to quiet it down just enough that the sound police shoulden't complain. Look around in classafieds for your state/area or just look around.

Well thats a lot of trash talk about rat rods...And rat rods to me are the same as rat bikes and in that i mean. Guys with rat rods and rat bikes want something to haul ass sound loud and be wild with..Not polish and go oohh pretty...

Some people enjoy the thrill of things more than the looks and if someone wants something with a big engine to haul ass down the street and sound loud...why does it have to cost crazy amounts of money and be freshly polished...

Its about the thrill of the ride not the look...

I didn't talk trash about rat rods, I stated facts about most of them. I do like some rat rods, I like them with brakes and in primer not rust and even flames on the hood is nice agen'st grey primer. with some ( not all ) rat rods theres no brakes or no front brakes and as I said, this is not road legal and probably a lot of the real ratty cars you saw had no plates and that is the reason ( no brakes ), there are other reasons like brake lights and such.

To look for a car go to www.collectorcartraderonline.com and search for cars in your area.
    Good luck.

Im leaving my car flat black while I finish it. Maybe it will always stay flat black. I love that look too.
But I am waiting until all of the body work is done (not that its alot) before I get it on the road. I guess that will be one good thing about Calgary's winter... I wont have the urge to go drive it before it's done

jaymzee, flat black is bad as hell but it's getting over done a little too much. Mostly because of all this TV crap and now everyone does it. I hear lots of people at school saying things like oh have you seen that new kind of hot rod look with flat black and the white walls and moon rims, I wish all that crap wasn't on TV because now having flat black is just like everyone else and I am the kind of person that likes to be way different than everyone else and everything I have. Well I don't focus on trying to be different and all but I think something original looks better to me. Well ok I will quit rambling on about that now....

Rat Rods and Unfinsihed Rods are two different things. From what your describing, yours sound like unfinished. A Unfinished rod is 100% safe and legal, but its not all chrome and glitz. Flat black, steel valve covers, simple interiors, these are the signs of an unfinished. However, rust(in some places. Dont live in NY!), rotting exhaust, shot brakes, iffy wiring, these are associated with "Rat Rods". Now theres varying degrees between both standards, but I personally lean towards Straight and Functional.

I suppose that is true. Mine is far from finished..... All of the rust I had has been patched except for the one fender Im trying to replace. My friend Cian and I are starting ourselves a "Rat Rod" group out here... but I guess what we drive arent true rat rods because we they are 100% safe. Just flat black. (for now)
