    rear axle for pickup rod

I'm rodding a 1950 chevy pickup with a chevy BB
and standard tranny. I need to find a rear axle to replace
the open diff. it came with. I'd like to find a late model
sports car or truck that has the same dimensions and has
a strong rear with posi. Has anyone done this before and
can point me to a specific model to search for?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

the only thing I could get from that was the suspension perch
to perch distance. I'm not planning on retaining leaf springs, I want to go with a 4 link. I just want to find some late model vehicles with similar dimensions.

Perhaps measurement across mounting surface to mounting surface and backing plate to backing plate mean something different to you than anyone else?

I have a 9" Ford rear end from a Granada under my 48 Chevy pickup.
    Good luck Don.

Let's see if I can give you a different perspective. Your original question (not stupid by my assessment) was asking for help finding a later rear that was dimensionally equivalent. I sent you a chart that has all that info. You then send back a comment that, giving you the benefit of the doubt, unintentionally says something like "what the f#@k good is that! I only get perch to perch dimensions and I'm not using leaf springs (like I'm supposed to know that?)!!" I can give you the info.........I can't comprehend it for you.

Now, strictly based on the info I gave you I can see that the rear in your truck is 60-62 inches wide. It's in there. There are around 20 different rears listed there that are that width or narrower (if you want to use wheels with more positive offset that have a "deeper" look you can use a narrower one). It's in there.

Lots of folks around here enjoy helping a newbie, sorta like passing the torch. Don't dump in your mess kit.

Good one. I'm using a 9" in both the Cougar ( 2.75:1) and the Bronco (?:1). I'd recomend a solid rear axle with either leafs or coils with either a torque shaft or axle braces. Coils will be more of a street rod trick while leafes will retain the trucks functionality. Also, the 9" is the strongest rear end (due to sheer size).

I'm also looking at getting a modified 9" shaved housing set up for the bronco's front axle.

I measured mine last night, it is 52" from drum backing to backing. The drums are only about 3" thick, but then there is another 2 or 3" of material until you get to the wheel mounting surface. I think I'd rather not have a deep wheel, so I guess I need a rear with mounting surfaces way out at 62" or so.
    Thanks
I'm learning as I go, I just want to make sure I don't get the wrong thing.

tcodi, thats what everybody, on this fourm wonts to help you do, but if they get the info, tell you what it is, then you probley didnt learn anything. ive only been on here a couple of mo. and have worked on cars for 40 yrs. and i learn something new every day. you can ask these guys almost anything about the older cars and they have the answer or know somedody that does and thats priceless, but the one thing (and i agree) that they dont like to do is, do it for you. ive spent hrs. in the junk yrds. looking for the right dif. and for the asking you had all the info. right in front of you, all you had to do is a little reading and you didnt wont to do that. if you take that info. and really study it youll probably come up with something that works better than you had planned. when you got that info. from bob you should have thanked him, got some measurements off of the car, come up with a wheel offset and useing that chart, come up with a dif. you needed. just my 2 cents worth.

I was grateful, I was just a little confused by the info. after my first look, and a little insulted by the derogatory reply.
I guess I should have studied it longer before asking an uninformed question. No hard feelings though.
I'm in my early 20's and never had anyone to teach me this stuff, I'm grateful to anyone older who has the knowledge and experience and is willing to take their time to help.
    Thanks to everyone.

No prob. And sometimes it helps to have multiple discipline guys like me around. I'm a hotrod enthusiast as well as an Off-roader. This does offer me some insight into diffs. Just remember that you'll need a really strong diff to take the abuse a BBC is gonna put out. Also, make sure you have a trans that can handle it too.

Can you tell us any more about the motor? like HP/Torque estimates?

It's a 402 with the stock iron heads with around 105cc chambers if I remember correctly. The pistons have a slight dome, I figure comp. will be around 9.5 maybe 10:1. 3.76 stroke/4.128 bore, the cam is a single pattern 305 adv, 255 @.050.
The cam is set up more for the upper range than I'd like, but I'm gonna see how I like it. I still haven't gotten a tranny, but I think I'm gonna get a new one that I know will be strong enough. I want to get a rear soon so I can keep busy this winter setting up the rear susp. I figure if I find a good doner vehicle I can get a rear for fairly cheap and buy it right away.
