440 or 413
I HAVE A 1973 WINNEBAGO WITH A BIG BLOCK MOPAR MOTOR. THE GUY I BOUGHT IT FROM CLAIMS IT IS A 440 BUT A LOT OF PEOPLE TELL ME THEY ONLY PUT 413's IN THE BAGO's. IS THERE A SIMPLE WAY TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO. I'M HEARING TO MANY DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF BULLSHIT ON THIS MOTOR. I'M NOT A MOPAR MAN AND WOULD LIKE TO SELL THE MOTOR BUT WANT TO KNOW WHAT I'M SELLING.
THANKS

there are stampings on the driver's side of the block in two places..the upper left side will tell you when it was cast, the series, whether it's a hemi or wedge and the next series of 3 numbers is the displacement..the final letter is body type... the lower pad next to the pan will give you the year of casting....if this is in a motor home it very well be a 413.....
one more thing....big blocks have the pump mounted externaly on the driver's side..as you are looking at it..to the right....they are internaly fed..some aftermarket pumps like Milodon have external oil lines to the pan for pickup and some with the return as well..
the 413 is an RB(raised block)Last edited by smokinwoody; 07-05-2004 at 01:21 PM.

the engine in that would either be a 413 industrial motor, or a 400, they never put 440s in those.
and most parts from 413s will fit a 440 and likewise, finding parts for a 413 red ram shouldnt be too bad, i know i havent had any problems finding parts for my 413, although i wouldnt mind a dual 4bbl red ram intake, heheC-bodies Unite!

if it is a "bigblock" there should be a stamp on the front of the motor, toward the drivers side, if it has A/C the stamp or machining may be behind the A/C compressor. hope that helps
Great to see your new post, Mike, and great to see CHR up and running again after several days of the Hmmm, can't reach this page.... Also good that you found an easy solution to your storage/access...
