225 Slant six
Does anyone know if they make headers or if you can even put headers on a 225 slant six?
I am buying a 70 Dodge Dart tomorrow and want to switch out to headers if possible, I will be driving this car as a daily driver as it is in too good of shape to just part it out for the 49 plymouth. I will continue the look for a new engine for the plymouth.
Will post pics of the car when I get it tomorrow if anyone is interested.1949 Plymouth Club Coupe Still in pieces.

Tim -
Some time back in my "Dad and son projects" posting I mentioned that I had some stuff provided by Chrysler entitled "Slant Six Performance Tips". There is good information in there for anybody who is interested in getting more power out of these engines.
If you'll send me a PM with a FAX number I'll get a copy to you if you want one.
If you decide to make your own headers it will tell you what you need to know in the way of tube sizes, tube lengths, etc. as well as some very inexpensive modifications you can make, such as how much you can mill the head and how to adapt a two barrel carburetor to your stock intake.
These are tough little engines. I have use several of them in cars and trucks, and even one in a houseboat.
As I said, let me know if you want the information.

There was a Hyper-pak S-S with factory header and a small AFB in the '60's. I drove one (a rental) and thought it was a 318.

If you can check through back issues of Hot Rod in your local library microfilm holdings you should find some articles about the XR6 built by Tex Smith, I believe it won AMBR but I forget the year. There is in Hot Rod somewhere back in the early '80s an article on fitting a turbocharger from one of the small 215 Buick-Pontiac-Olds aluminum V8s to a 225 along with 1/4 mile test times before and after and how to modify the 215 turbo with an adjustable waste gate controlled by a knob on the dash board. I had plans for my 225 Volare with 4-speed stick overdrive and I bought such a 215 turbo but lost it in the midst of moving from one house to another. Maybe a turbo from one of the modern 4-cyl engines could be adapted to a 225. The idea is that the 225 has a pretty stout bottom end and can be turbocharged without worry, but the key was that the turbo for the 215-V8 was matched in size pretty close to the 225 displacement and had a waste gate that is easily adjustable.

Myself I used a Rayjay turbo on mine........
Also not all the 225 have the same bottom end........ not sure what year but sometime in the 70's they went to a cast crank

Some serious Mopar sixes -
The first two pictures are of a "slant six" powered dragster built by Jim Nelson and Dode Martin of Carlsbad, Califonia, the "Dragmaster" and "Dragliner" boys.
The third and fourth pictures are of a really remarkable "G Gas" coupe built and raced by a guy named Pete McNichols from Hazel Park, Michigan. The car is an original (steel body) Willys coupe, and the engine is ..... get this! ..... an early 170 cubic incher, not a 225 c.i. later one. The 225 was the "big" engine!
Don Shillady speaks of Tex Smith's "XR6" roadster. Now, there was a true work of art. Sorry Don. I couldn't find a picture of that one.

Naturally I screwed up, trying to send pictures. That one is Pete McNicholls' engine. I'll try to send a shot of Pete's coupe now, followed by the Nelson and Martin car. Wish me luck!

OK, don't yell at me! That's Nelson and Martin's engine. Now I'll try Pete's car again.

Hey guys,
I also just bought a slant 6 225. My plan is to turbo it and do custom exhaust. There was a set of headers on ebay a couple days back if used is the route you want to go. as for a turbo, do a google search for "turbo slant six" it'll give you a page for a guy who did a turbo setup for under $400. I'm using his info to make a custom setup for myself. keep us updated on your progress.
