I like trucks
Well, just thought I'd introduce myself. Hello.
My current "rods" are a 1994 S-10, and a 1973 Datsun 240z.
Oddly enough, my s-10 is more of a hotrod. It's got an LT1 out of a 94 vette, and a 700r4 out of an early 90's f-body. Many things done to the looks, but it is definatly more of a rod than a new style show truck. It's got American Racing Torque thrust wheels, two tone paint, a mild lowering job, and mono-chrome styling.
The Datsun is ALL stock. I believe everything is original except the paint. It's factory orange, w/ black interior, and a 4 speed.
The reason I began looking for this site, is I have currently got the idea in my head that I want to build an early chevy p/u rat rod. Something pre '36. However, I don't have alot of skills, and I don't really know what is normally done to these older vehicles to make them road worthy and half-way daily driveable. I'm here to learn, and to shop.
The idea is to try to sell the datsun, and put the money towards the rod, while keeping my truck to daily drive long enough to get the rod built and be able to turn the truck into a week-end track truck.'73 Datsun 240z - stock

First of all, since people tell me they have wondered about it. My name is simple. I like chevys, and my birthday is April 20, 1983 - 4/20/83.
Yeah, the ease of building is half the reason for me wanting a rat rod. I would like to build up my datsun, but I just can't bring myself to tear into a car that looks as good as it does. And is as complete as it is. If I were to build it, it would be a chevy V-8 and 6-speed, but I just can't tear into a car that is perfect for a complete resto. I just don't have the money/want to resto it.
No front brakes? Why is that? If I'm gonna be driving it much in Houston, I'm gonna want all the brakes I can get . I've noticed some rods without them, but why? Less weight? I always assumed the rods with big and little tire configurations pretty much made the front brakes useless, but mine will be a little more balanced on tire size.
Here's a couple pics...
This is my favorite...

Datsun...
I need to get more pics of that dat since I now have a digi cam.
Thanks for the warm welcome.'73 Datsun 240z - stock

Reason no front brakes is because rat rods are junk rods made on a budjet and back then they didn't have brakes, barely any floors, people would use sheet metal from roofs, shingles, etc. That's why. Now I am sure you wan't a rat rod look with bare metal clear coated or flat black with wide whitewalls but still wan't the truck to operate good. That really isn't rat rodding but has the rat rod look. Just paint the thing either flat black or sand/media blast it to bare metal and put a clear over it, drop the hell out of it and then wide whitewalls with moon caps or something like that over it. Or even spoked wheels and motorcycle tires on it. Go to the cars for sale section on here and about 10 threads down there is a rat rod truck for sale, look at that for ideas, that is a nice truck

If you wan't something done right, then you have to do it yourself!

lt1s10 - Yeah, I don't really think of the truck as hotrod, but it's "more of a rod" than the dat.
As far as getting "just the look" of the rat rod. I plan on building it as a mix of true rat, and what I think I would need. Some may think it's dumb, but I still wanna drive it everyday if I build one. It needs to be structurally sound, and operate correctly. But it will be as low a budget as I can. I guess I need to build it "up" enough, that my g/f will still ride with me . So that may be the minimum requirements. It's not like it's gonna beautiful, or have an LT1, or have much money invested at all.'73 Datsun 240z - stock
