Didn't go into the powerplant much coz it's just the standby motor I've had for about 15 years. Not buildin the monster till i get the metalwork done.
Currently it's a near stock 1600 dual port. Ported & matched intakes, mild cam, single center mount 40mm Weber IDF, header with a single quiet pack muffler, & a 45K Volt HEI ignition using GM coil & trigger module with a modified Bosch 009 dizzy with hall effect sensor. Runs a tad hotter than the stock config, but isn't nearly as fun as others I have built & worked on.
The PLAN, I say plan coz plans change, is to build a 2.5litre engine with a turbo & EFI setup, gonna look for somwhere in the area of 200-250 HP, but if I get stupid I might make it adjustable for more. If I stay with the typical type one motor I can do it easily & not too expensive, but I'm looking at the Type 4 (VW's big block as it were) for a more reliable monster motor. Thats on hold tho as I need the cash for the body.

Paint will be flat black, probably good ol John Deere Blitz Black, & I am going to put in some hand cut black graphis here & there made from Black reflective tape. Loks killer on satin paint!

A Delta is a tundra truck. Big ol center steer monster built in Canada. There are three classes, the one pictured here is the Delta Two. Turbo diesel powered all wheel drive & while not fast, very fun! Common transportation when the snow is too much for the Ford 4x4 vans.

(Photo courtesy of the US Antarctic Program photo library)
The class One has been phased out but was smaller & gasoline powered, bounced like crazy & sounded like you were at the tractor pulls with twin stacks & no mufflers. The class Three is HUGE, 3 live axles, a large flat bed, & is primarily used to transport cargo over the softer snow of the polar plateu.
Now, if I can get back down that way I wanna drive this,...

    Schwing! :P
I dig ALL cars, old & new, whether they were hammered out of american iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things.

    But thats just my opinion.

Ahhh VWS.. Thanks for the engine clarification. You're smart to do the body first! Reward yourself after, with the engine... We need to see that final paint job. Sounds perrrrfect.

Anyone ever blow VW engines or are the cranks too mild?

Now we know what a Delta is... They look like a blast. Up that high without even a hood u have to look over.. Sweet.

    Welcome!

    Nice looking bug!

What is your job in the Navy? Just Curious, I spent 8 years active duty Navy as an "AT", 5 years with Army National Guard and now plan on finishing my last 7 years with the Naval Reserves.
I had to change rating for the reserves, from an "AT" to "ET"
So I guess I'll be learning some new stuff, which is always good.

While I was in the Army, got to drive Humvees, deuce and halfs, and 5 ton 6X6's, those are cool but very bumpy ride. Good for driving over imports though...

It's amusing how many people are finding themselves saying those dreaded words,... What a cool bug. lol
    Funny thing life.

As for the power abilities, blowers work beter for big engines, too much heat & power loss on most smaller displacement plants. Not the most efficient way to make horses, especialy on something you wanna be streetable. Most all of the monster VW based engines (coz we all know a pro drag V8 isn't a REAL GM or a Ford anymore than my toaster is) run turbo & EFI. The VW Paradise Express is a turbo EFI beast that runs 206mph low 6 second 1/4's. Yep, that fast on a flat 4, crazy stuff!
Most of the streetable beasts run 200hp on avg, have seen lots more than that. The parts are out there, & there are a couple specialty places that make cranks that can handle over 400hp.
As for what I do in the Navy,... As little as possible & still get paid. Your tax dollars, hardly at work!
Actualy that wold be funnier if I din't have to pay taxes too,... :P
I'm an AME, currently workin on P-3's. Lordy I HATE em too. But ah well, pays the bills & all that. I do enjoy the work & have some good kids workin for me, there are much worse places to be, like haze grey & under way. *gag!*
I'm an E5 (still,..*groan*) in the active side of the reserves, used to be called TAR, but they changed it to FTS. Whatever,... Advancement sucks BAD, but it allows me to be home more so the sacrifice is woth it.
Been in 17 nearly years now & lookin forward to gettin my final transfer to NAS Backyard, then the US Nuclear Canoe Club can kiss my hiney. lol

Right now? Maybe 20 or so.
Stock configuration when i ran it on the highway years back I would get about 30 MPG at speeds around 70-75. The heat in CA messed with it but I put in a Moroso cool can & that helped tons.

This engine isn't real efficient with the Weber & I need to work some more on the tuning. I'm thinking about bumping up the compression, that will yield some more power & help my milage as well.

If you'd like some info & more fuel for your ideas go look at www.volksrods.com. The Rat Patrol car is an awesome lil beastie!

Hey VW-Good lookin' ride buddy. If I thought a VW street rod could have looked that good, Iwouldn't have spent all my money on my Model A. (LOL)

All kiddin' aside, I really like the looks. I had 1964 VW I turned into a "dune buggy"
back in the early '70's when I lived in Pennsylvania. . Since there isn't much sand in Pennsylvania, had a lot of fun bangin' around in the mud!

    Welcome Bro!

That is one of the best V-rods out there. It's bare bones simple, pure function & looks evil doin it. there are a couple others out there like it that are just as wicked, but that one has made the greatest impact on me.

The rat patrol car was narrowed when they chopped it, instead of the fun task of widening the roof, the guy who runs the shop decided to narrow the chassis. Guy is loony, but the car speaks for itself!
Need a good giggle, poke around & find the pic of the tickets they made up to give out at shows. They're hilarious.

As for bajas, I actualy traded my old 71 Superbeetle for this car just so I could start this project. The super was made into a baja when I lived out in the mojave desert & got tired of tearing the fenders off. It had an 1835cc race motor in it that pulled like a mutha & never once let me down. I blew a head apart but it still limped me home from 15 miles in the desert (str8 line miles, the drive was much longer than that). People always say you cant baja a super, but I beg to differ, that lil car has more air time than some planes! lol

There's alot of cars I'd love to get & am making a list of the bodies I see here & there around my area so if I get the chance I'll buy one or twenty. Till then this lil car is my passion & even though there are others out there, I dont see me parking next to one at a show anytime soon. I kinda like that idea.
