Please please, keep the booing to a dull roar,...
May as well hop on in here since I made the effort to sign on & become a member. Cant effectively lurk here if i cant see things, so here I am.
Howdy!
Been a gear head for as long as I can remeber. If it has wheels, tracks, or a combination of both, I can drive it. Have made a fairly good effort of driving every type of vehicle I can & have managed to drive some that very few people have ever heard of in the process. (anyone know what a Delta is?)
I work on planes for the Navy, but fix motorcycles & VW's on the side. I love all cars & if I had the cash & the room I'd have a stable that would make ya cry. As the Navy doesn't pay me that well, I have my toy & my truck for now. I dont go for any one make over another, it's limiting yourself & thats something I will never do.
So, my current obsession is this lil beastie here.
It's a 1970 VW Beetle, or was. Lets just say it's "mostly" a VW. It has a Ford model A based tube front axle, sprung behind with 4" drop & 4bar setup. Ford spindles with 80's GM 10" discs. Brakes are pushed with a Porsche 944 master cyl. the steering is a combination of a Nissan 260Z steering column, some parts from Sweet Mfg. & a 68 Mustang steering box. Seats are from a Mazda 626, modified to bolt onto the stock VW lowers nice & clean like. Wiring system was completely redesigned & routed by myself, all aircraft grade wiring & sheathed in nickel plated copper weave conduit with junction blocks for ease of maintenence & MUCH cleaner install. The guages are all Nordskog digital with a magnetic speed pickup on the axle courtesy of Speedometer Solutions.
I've done all of the work on my own except for the welding on the front spring mount since I didn't trust my rusty skills on something that important. I am working on that tho, so I'll be finishing the rest myself.
It's about halfway where I want it as far as the body goes, want to make it into a 2 seat cabin, so I will be doing some major metal work on the rear this summer. THEN I get to start on the final interrior mods. Joy!
For those that are interested in details & an indepth step by step, I have a thread on www.shoptalkforums.com under the photo gallery section titles 70 Beetle VolksRod.
Keep em rubber side down.

I dig ALL cars, old & new, whether they were hammered out of american iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things.
But thats just my opinion.

That's a very interesting bug you got there, VW. I think you have a great originality style going there. I know about the Navy pay, hehe, spent 20 years there myself. Welcome to the Forums.Duane S

The ENGINE man!!? What kinda motive power is that thing packin???!?!?!?
I like the paint job too or if that's primer I hope you contemplate a muted paint job as compared to Bright with flames etc. I think the vehicle is what's cool and I think a loud paint job will sorta smother the "uniqueness".
Maybe a digital camo job.
