Perhaps I was a little hasty in original my post. I know in the long run, the fault is mine, I just get so pi$$ed I can't do anything without a dozen pop ups trying to sell me spyblocker, etc. Can't get anything done. When the first one hits, then its about 6 more right behind it. By the time I close them all, its starts all over again.

Maybe Denny will ignore my post, cause I do really like the folks and the site, and it has been very helpful to me.

If you are running Internet Explorer, you can go to the TOOLS menu and choose "pop up blocker" and choose to block all pop ups.

In today's world, it is imperative that a computer has an anti-virus protector running....one that you can update at least monthly. Symantec (Norton) and McAfee are the two best known ones. The freebies may work for a specific instance but are generally unreliable in the long run since the persons supporting the update file lose interest or dont have the resources to perform constant updates. Virus protection is cheap but it is like a condom.....you gotta use it!

You cannot get a virus from an email unless you open an attachment or click on a link. If the email or web page is unknown, why would you click on it anyway? There are tricky ways to get a virus...say someone at your church sends you a .jpg file....a virus can be embedded in the picture file so opening the file will load the virus.....gotta have protection!!!! It isnt the site.....there is no .porn or no .virus web pages....all files and pages should be suspect.

Good stuff. While we're "sharing" useful geek stuff, last night an ultra computer geek buddy of mine turned me on to an online file backup site. Again, not a commercial, I get no kick back, and it costs to enroll. But for those interested, it's easier than a second or mirror drive, tape backup (is ANYBODY doing THAT anymore?), and holds more data than CD's, sticks, or whatever media you use; www.carbonite.com

If you use the Kim Kommando referral you'll get 30 day free trial rather than 15.

Take a look at CNET and in the search box type in Free Virus Protection. There are several including a version of Norton and Barracuda that are free or, if not, fairly inexpensive. I'm running Earthlink which has virus protection as well as a great pop up blocker, anti scam and anonymous emails which seem to causing me my heartache here at CHR, plus Norton. So far in three years with this PC, no problems (except here where I can't get my 'name' back nor my notifications since Brent's new hard drives) but that my computer is somewhat slow booting up on the internet due to so many security checks. Since I came from the corporate world where loss of information in any way could have cost my company(GE Power Systems) many millions, feel that I have about as good a level of protection possible and still able to function reasonably well.

    Denny,
The GE intrernet/intranet since I retired( ) has become so secure that you almost can't go out of the system which really makes it difficult for people, in some cases, to do their jobs. But - not my problem anymore

There is a theory that the virus protection providers write viruses to keep themselves in business!! Talk about a consipiracy theory!!

That's fine if you want to store in a partition, another computer on your local network, or on removable media, but what I suggested is for off site storage. Not exactly an apples to apples (no pun intended ) comparison. With the Windows deal say someone breaks into your house, steals all your computer stuff you're toast, or worse a fire. It's certainly better than nothing, but the point of the carbonite site is "unlimited" storage size, that's offsite and accessible from anywhere.

Also it backs up everything in real time in the background, no need to do anything separate to make it happen. Again, options for those who appreciate them.

The computer doctor just left, my virus has been cured. He put on a blocker/scanner that should not let me do this again. I'm going to be OK now.

Thanks for keeping me on life support until I got well.

SpyBot works pretty good too. I have it on all my machines at the house and we use it at work also.
