youngin' here
Yea sup guys.. my name is Nick and I live in San Antonio, Texas. i am 16 years old and own a 1966 Ranchero. I got it for my 16th bday and am currently in the process of restoring it with my dad. We have already successfully finished the interior and are not working on the body and the engine. I have so many plans for this car and have a long way to go until i can achieve them especially on my budget.

Hey Nick, sounds like a cool project. I would have just made the trip to Mexico if it runs to have gotten the interior done in el cheapo mex fashion, buts that me. Anyways whats under the hood of the 66 and what kinda tranny you got?"its better to rule in hell, than serve in heaven."

You should keep the tranny but dump the 289 and get a 429 cobra- jet, that will get you moving and if you dont have your liscense yet take it in that, you'l give the instructor the ride of his/ her life. You don't know what you've got til it's gone

Keep the 289.
Get someone or you and your father do a good port job on the heads. You being 16, you don't want too much under your foot.
I'd be dead right now if I had a big motor in my 58 Chevy Bel Air that I had as my first car.

LoL, yea well Im pretty broke right now and the only thing im worried about at the moment is driving. But I expect that I will keep the 289 for a while but eventually switch out the engine and the tranny.

I love ranchero's and i guess the reason I suggested go with the 429 is because that is my favorite ford V8 motor, you put both of them togther and to me you get the perfect vehicle. You don't know what you've got til it's gone

What's wrong with too much power, I am 15 and I am retrofitting a 350 into my 1983 Mercedes Benz 240D.You don't know what you've got til it's gone

Theres nothing wrong with too much power... i hope to add some serious power to my car in a couple of years. I was actually thinkning bout stickin a 351W or perhaps a 390. And if i went with the 429 a tranny change would most likely be in order right? How much torque does the 429 put out? and hp?

289's are a good motor, from the factory the hp was rated at 271 horsepower. More power means way more bucks for trannys, converters, rear ends, etc.etc. etc. A nicely freshened 289 will do great in the Ranchero, if you have some extra bucks, get it balanced and go to a 2000 stall converter and a shift kit. Your plan is very sound, do what you can afford to do and keep it as a driver. Congrats on having a brain and using it !!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!
