I agree Dave, but everyone should have the opportunity to drive a flattie powered fat Ford with a straight axle.Ken Thomas

hey koulaide, good lookin car! im going with a weedetr (www.weedetrstreetrod.com) rear end kit for mine and my axle is out of an 01 explorer. for the front i plan on a posies front spring with a reversed eye, which was stated befor. theres a guy that will drop your axle for 200 plus shipping. i plan on using him, unless he seems like a real A-hole when i call him.
below is a pic of a buddy of mines 46 sedan with a 4 inch drop front axle with the posie reverse eye spring (worth an inch extra) up front. the rear is the standard eye weedetr kit with a 9 inch axle. weedetr offers a reverse eye rear spring kit which will lower the rear an additional 1.5 inchs. his engine is a lightly warmed over flathead backed by an m-21. no, its not fast. but it gets the job done and looks and sounds MUCH cooler than any crate engine you could get.

Bob,
I want to ask you some question about other things you have done and pick your brain about some idea I have. Any chance I can give you a call in a day or two?

I have two 46 Fords both Sedans, both lowered etc. These are pretty easy cars to do. Both of mine have 9" Ford rear ends nothing fancy just set up on leaf springs. The Red one has a 4" dropped straight axle, its OK looks good but the ride could be a lot better. The copper one has a Mustang II front suspension rides like a dream and also looks very good "I Think". The Copper one is a Small Block Chevy and is very reliable and streetable and a pleasure to drive. The red one is Ford powered and is just miserable, this is the last car I will build with Ford power, the Chevys are just to easy and cheap to do as well. Good luck on your Coupe!!

Hey Hombre, what Ford engine/trans are you using in the red one and what makes it so miserable? I've been running a Ford 302 in a 37 Ford for years. Other than the initial installation being more challenging than the Chevy engine, the driveability & dependability has been great up until 2 years ago when I started a complete rebuild on the car. It's still under construction but I'm putting the 302 back in it. Mine also has Mustang II front suspension & a 9" rear.....
Both of your 46's look like nice cars btw."It is not much good thinking of a thing unless you think it out." - H.G. Wells

I love the look of a flathead - but they weren't/aren't called steamers for no reason. Yes, you can get them so they produce reasonable power (about the same as a 1990 four cylinder Mustang). For that amount of money you can transplant a 302/351W and have real world reliability instead of old world pain. Parts are seldom easily available at your local Advance Auto or for that matter, even NAPA and when they are, expensive. The car has a 6 volt POSITIVE ground system, so there are problems finding simple electrical parts. Now, with all that said, and while you are 'militarized' get it running and have some fun, then later, after some good planning and a mods parts list in hand, then do your engine transplant. For sure we'll help here - either wayDave W

randyr, That little sedan has a 351 W and a C-4 Tranny. I guess I should not blame Ford altoghether for this as I am sure some of it is my fault. I just don't understand this motor and there seems to be a new problem everyday. Some of those problems are just not related to the motor tranny problems but the ones that are make it a miserable little car.

.......an engine with a carb and distributor, be it Ford, Chebbie or any other make is nothing but a big air pump that has a set of spark plugs to make an air fuel mixture burn to turn a long shaft that eventually turns a wheel-tire combo to make the car go down the road. Sometimes that combo, it's doomed to daily pain and eventual destruction no matter how much loving care, money, gifts of premium liquids and attention you give it - just like some ladies I have known in the distant pastDave W
