429 stroker kit in 66 mustang

hey just stoped by to talk about my situation progress and dream. it started with my dads 68 third he got back in the new millennium for $600, blown engine. he took it out and salvaged everything but the block. two years ago we went half on a 70s 429 with the c6 all stock i installed it and started it a couple times it needs to wake up with a stoker kit a bought two other donor cars with the same engine the 429 thunderjet. these cars are really heavy so i want to get a stoker kit for one engine sell the rest and put the stroker in my dads 66 mustang. i got the wwiend stealth intake and a holly carb. may want new heads unless i can port the c9ve-e heads i got\. can anyone tell me if these engines only run on premium fuel? and any ideas? i want get around 600 hp out of it. and at least .030 over and maybe 504 ci. thanks in advance.

The 501" kit is a good one! With a decent set of heads, Edelbrock Performer RPM or equivalent, and the right cam you'll make all the power you'll want for a mild street car!

Better look at the shock towers in that 66 Mustang first. Not a lot of room between them for something the size of the 429-460. 67-68 a different story.

Hello Gerry. Even as insane and unorthodox as I am, I wouldn't consider a BBF in a '66 Mustang. You'll just ruin the car. First it has to be given a front clip from another type of car in order to get rid of the shock towers. Then, that big hunk of iron over the front axle will just be a bear to handle. Tough to steer, tough to manage in the curves, just an evil-handling beast. It would take a C6 to handle the torque and that means cutting and rebuilding the floor and driveshaft tunnel. You'd need a narrowed 9 inch in the rear. It's just a bad idea that even I would not undertake. Pirate a 5.0 and trans from a late Mustang and rig it for a 150hp shot of N2O. Replace your rear with an 8.8 rear out of the same donor. You'll rip the tires off that little jewel.

Gerry - while you may love that '66 and the 429, a local guy did a '65 with your 429's big brother, a 460 - big time. Redid the shock towers and who knows what else to make it fit. Ran like stink - in a straight line. The downfall - it wouldn't stop even with disc's in the front and a 9" w/drums in the back. It also wouldn't turn. The car - scrap iron and probably now part of a new Toyota or Honda.

Unless you just use the body with a full tube frame, a decent engine set back and someone else's steering and suspension, you will be disappointed. As Tech said, a nicely warmed 302/5.0, even one out to 331 or 347 if you really need to go fast will probably be all that car chassis can take without significant reinforcements. You can then use a C4, keep the 8" rear end or upgrade to the 9" or an 8.8 with the integral e-brake and disc's.

Whatever way you decide to go, make a plan (on paper), do your research and decide how much you want to spend. Dollar wise, 'playing' with cars is no longer a poor man's past time. And as far as help, for sure someone here will give you some, regardless of what you need

A 289 is a great engine, that is until you get to mating with auto transmissions. As a suggestion, find a good 302 block and build from there as every other item will interface easily with the chassis. If it's a 3/4 speed, go to it. As much as a 351W would sound good too, they have some width problems in an early 'stang's shock towers
