I suppose Streets would have answered this quickly so you can only check his many, many posts, but is there not a new law starting in 1988 (?) that forbids putting older engines in post '88 cars? Check on this as far as how strictly this is enforced where you are. Probably an engine of the same external size and type will not be noticed? Anyway PAW has a neat kit for a 383 block which is already clearanced and only needs proper assembly, but the shipping to Detroit could be a barrier so you need to explore the capability of local shops and compare prices. Still, I would have bought the PAW 383 if the shipping was less, but I found a local shop I could talk to during the build.

    Lets be honest

If you live in the Detroit area, you are more likely to have a good engine builder in your own area. I could probably do it, but your shipping costs, plus parts, plus my fee would probably place it in the same price as buying a new engine from Summit. I would HIGHLY recommend you check the local shops first. They may have an engine ready to just swap out.
