    Exclamation Garage ideas

Hey im new to this site and was reading about garage designs and was wondering where i can go and get some ideas. I am currently redoing my pole barn and am getting ready to paint and need help with some ideas. Im thinking about using black, red and yellow for the walls but also want to see other garages with cool designes.

Welcome to CHR cchapman. I'm sure there are plenty of sites under Pole barns. Wish I had one to work on my vehicle.

Pole barns? I am not sure of what that really is. Do a search and check out some of the garages from people here to give you ideas. For walls in a shop or garage a checkered flag across the whole walls would look sweet if you wanna hot rod it out. Not too sure. We are getting to build a shop here at my house soon when my dad get's time and money but it will be a while and we are trying to look for idea's as well.

    Exclamation IDEAS?

What i am really looking for is what people have done to their garages just to get ideas. My barn is 30x40 but half of it will have a motor home filling it up. Just this weekend I just about got all the drywall done except for the ceiling which is twelve foot high. Any ideas will help
    Thanks
    Chuck

Get some pictures of what it looks like now first. That will help people to give you idea's.

If you paint the walls the way your talking about. it's sure going to be dark in there. The lighter the color the brighter the light will be. As for the layout, lay it put on paper for the best layout that will work for you. where you going to have your saws, welding stuff, air comp, heat, disign it for a lift,(incase you buy one later)
which spot is going to be your work area, which spot is going to be your park area.
The only dumb question is the one you don't ask..

I thought about painting my garage walls white so it would be brighter inside but I'm too busy working on cars to git er done.
Are you building a place to work or do you just want a cool setting to park your car?
I can't think of anything that I ever saw painted black, yellow and red. I don't think it's a good color combo but maybe it looks better than it sounds

It all depends on how you're going to use it as Al says. I agree with 34 on the light issues, especially if you plan to work there, but even just for parking. That motor home will darken things even more. I've seen color combos similar to what you're talking about. To my eye I'd do the black on the bottom (hides dirt marks if you lean a tire, or anything else, against it) up to about 42-48", then the red in a band about 7-8", then the yellow same width or an inch less. The rest of the way up, and the ceiling, in bright white. As a variation, you could but a wave pattern at 10' intervals around the walls (avoid a zig-zag as it sends a tension message).

    Too late now!

My previous shop was a "Pole barn".

Rather than drywall the inside, I had the walls and ceiling (bottom of trusses) "Skinned" with the same white ribbed metal that was used on the outside. This gave me 9' ceiling.

This turned out to be less expensive than drywall & paint!

This made it very easy for cleaning and never have to paint.

Also...I had the area between two of the trusses boxed in then positioned a car lift so when the car was raised, it went up in between the trusses. It really worked slick!

If you have one of those 30+ gallon compressors put it on the outside of the barn and feed a 30' hose through the wall. It keeps the noise level down when it turns on plus it saves a little space. I always that was a great idea. Insulate the walls, plenty of shelving and storage. I always thought a work pit would be cool, like an oil change shop. Unless, you are putting in a hydraulic lift.

    Those R a few suggestions I have.

    Re: Garage ideas

At my last place (an old farmhouse and outbuildings) I had a 24' x 55' tractor shed. It had doors all along the one side, but had bare wood board walls.

I made a deal with a local garage door company. Seems in the midwest, a lot of garage door assemblies get replaced because the bottom door rots off, or the top door tears out... But the middle three or four panels are ok. I used to glean all the decent center doors (and made sure they were insulated panels) and removed the hardware.... Took them home and stacked them up on the interior walls, and even the cielings. Ended up with a solid wall interior that was insulated.

    Total cost?
About $20 for long drywall screws.

Paint your walls and ceiling white. That little trick will make your lights twice as effective. Don't use those cheap 4' shop lights. Use the 8' ones. They work better and the tubes are easier to change, a reall advantage when you are working 10' up on an 8' step ladder.

Lots of electrical outlets. You can not have to many.

Compressor outside. Make a shed roof to cover it. You don't want the motor to get wet (photo).

Bob gave a REALLY good tip on the lights. In our garage we have the 4 foot long florecents and they SUCK! They dont put out too much line and dont last too long. Get longer 8' ones, they will give off much more light and less light bulbs to buy and less lights to have to have up there... Next thing I want for my garage is a drop light because there isn't enough light in my garage. Another thing if it gets cold there in winter is a nice heater... I just got a smaller 3 foot one that's pretty old but got it for free and it works so I can't complain, it helps my knee's when it is cold out.
