Thumbs up Hello Fellow Rodders, New Old Geezer?

    Hi gang,
I am new to this site and just happened to stumble across it during a search for info on the heads I have on a SBC 350 that I am in the process of prepping to rebuild. It will be dropped into my 57' Chevy Shortbed Stepside Pick Em Up.

I have lots of plans for this project, which I am just getting started on after having it sit in my driveway for nearly a year. LOL Can't rush into things you know!

I have had a bit of experience in the mechanical end of things, as well as a good many years in the electronics world, ( designed and installed pro sound systems) as we all know it is a rapidly changing world and new technology is happening around us My last project I undertook as a major item was some time ago.

Now I have the time to do what I love the best, but I have only kept up with the automotive technology on the surface.

I am looking forward to delving back into the world of faster women...... Oh wait wrong forum LOL.

As I was saying, back into the world of Hot Rodding and engine build up's.
My truck is a complete stocker at this time, with an inline 6 cyl, standard 3 on the tree, staight axle and kingpins with drum brakes all around.

I have already picked up a 74' Camaro front clip with 11 in disc brakes, the 350 cu. in. complete engine, less intake system, the rear differential, and some of the needed replacement trim.

I plan on building this block into a 383 stroker, backed by a TH400, and setting a Dana 60 with 3.73:1's under the bed.... yes I know some of the Chevy truists just shuddered, but the price was right, and it has already been prepped with Currie components!

I do not have any misplaced ideals as far as a rapid completion date for this project, unlike my expectations as a youth. Don't we all have to realize these things as life goes on around us?

I do have some questions regarding the heads I have though and as of yet have been unable to locate the specs for them and whether they are worth keeping or dis them and buy new.

They are on a Canadian block, that was a truck motor, chased those #'s and it is a one piece rear main, 2 bolt block and was F.I. the casting numbers for the heads are 14102193, and have 1.94 and 1.5001 valves in them, what I need to know is the chamber size and flow of these heads.

This going to be a daily driver so I am not going to be very radical with the cam and compression, but I do want "some" performance out it.

Any help you Guys and/or Gals can toss my way is appreciated.

Glad to have found this site, as I have read a good many questions and responses.

    Happy Rodding,
    Jim

May I be the first to say: welcome.

You think you're slow? I've had my '59 Big Window PU for over thirty years; it is now in the early stages of it's third re-incarnation. Admittedly, there have been other cars and projects scattered in among the years, but ------. Right now, it's my son's '69 Torino that's occupying time, with a broken engine.

Sounds to me as if you are on track for a nice build. And there ain't nothin' wrong with a Dana 60; they're tough, possibly more so than a 12 bolt or 9 Incher, just different.

    •CYLINDER HEAD SPECS:
    CASTING NUMBER 14102193

    SWIRL PORT INTAKE PORT DESIGN

    65.3cc COMBUSTION CHAMBER

    1.94" INTAKE 1.50" EXHAUST VALVE

VALVE SPRING PART NUMBER IS 3911068 (SAME SPRING USED WITH THE OLD 300H.P 350 CRATE)

INSTALLED HEIGHT 1.70" PRESSURE @ INSTALLED HEIGHT IS 80 LBS * PRESSURE WITH VALVE OPEN IS 267 LBS.

THESE SPRINGS ARE GOOD FOR .550" LIFT BUT CLEARENCE BETWEEN GUIDE AND RETAINER MUST BE DOUBLE CHECKED BEFORE ATTEMPTING.

    7 BOLT EXHAUST FLANGE

    CENTERBOLT VALVE COVER FLANGE

1987-1995 INTAKE MANIFOLD BOLT PATTERN WITH CENTER INTAKE BOLTS CANTED @ 72° ANGLE

THIS CYLINDER HEAD IS NOT A PERFORMANCE ORIENTED CYLINDER HEAD. IT IS CLASSIFIED AS A HIGH SWIRL HEAD THAT WAS INTENDED FOR GOOD BOTTOM END TORQUE AND FUEL ECONOMY. THE INTAKE RUNNER IS RESTRICTIVE BECCAUSE IT HAS A RAMP CAST INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE BOWL TO PROMOTE HIGH SWIRL.

I have these same heads on a 1978 truck 350 4bolt block it is bored .030 over and has a TPI intake from a pontiac firebird. this motor is in my 57 buick and it has great low end power. I have not checked gas mileage. I have 750 mi. on this motor so far.

    Dayuuuummmmm,

I know the world of Hot Rodding is fast....... but wow!

Jack, Thanks for the specs. You must have an unending supply of specs at your fingertips. I have looked and looked for these without anything more then the basics. Suffice it to say, I can't make my usual comments regarding a Pontiac Guy! LOL
Can you answer me this then on top of all that info, I do not want to run F.I. on my motor can I use these with carburation? Understanding that I am not looking to build a streetable 600 H.P monster. I was looking at perhaps using a 600 to 700 cfm with a manual choke, with a high quality electric fuel pump.
I do need some bottom end torque but the mid range power and reliability are my biggest concerns. After all it is a long drive from California to Detroit for The Woodward Cruise, after I am finished with my build

Rrumbler, Yes I do like the ruggedness of the Dana, as well as the fact that it is a full time posi. Also I had a 69 Charger RT with a 440 Mag way back in the day with a Dana 60 and it took one heck of a beating with no problems.
A third incarnation? I thought that our projects just never stopped changing. LOL

    Techinspector,
I am glad to hear that I am not the only one that had that problem... it reassured me that I was not that stupid and unable to find a source for the info. I am impressed by your knowledge of motors and such, I have read many of your replies to other questions and the only thing that comes to mind is why do we respond to some of them that clearly are not looking for real answers

    randywrench,
You did not say if you had any work done to the runners or if you left them stock. I am going to presume that they are pretty much in stock condition since you are running them w / TPI.
    By the way.... GO PACKERS!!!

    Jim,

Of course you can run it with carburetion. A nice dual-plane manifold and a small carb would work just fine. 700 CFM would be a bit too large for the combo you mention, but the exact carb would depend on the cam you choose.

Richard is much more of a font of information on these combos than I am, because I just can't resist the horsepower. I'll bet he can quote a nice cam and carb size for you right off the top of his head. You'll find different people on this site have favorite carbs - just like they have favorite brands of beer.

An Edelbrock Performer® Manifold (idle to 5500 rpm, dual plane, low rise) sounds like a good choice for your application. If you like Edelbrock carbs, their electric choke, 600 CFM performer carb was on almost every car at the T-bucket nationals this year.

You could use a matching Edelbrock Performer camshaft, and use the whole package, but I tend to prefer Comp Cams bumpsticks.

If you want more performance than that - say 1500 - 6500 RPM range, you can kick it up to the Performer Plus, but I'm guessing those heads won't be up to the task without some work.

I'm not necessarily advocating Edelbrock stuff, but they do a great deal of work in matching their components for an integrated system. Cam/carb/manifold all need to work together.

No matter who you get your equipment from, they have to be matched, or your engine turns out to be a Charlie Foxtrot.

You might want to check this site and click on "Power Package Guide."

The Holley red pump is a good all-around choice, and it goes for a bit less than a C-note from Summit.
