    Clearcoating after 24hrs

I've heard mixed opinions on whether it would be ok to clearcoat after 24hrs? I need to clearcoat the engine bay/trunk area. It has been past the 24hrs marker (long story). The paint I'm using is PPG DBC orient blue metallic. Would it be ok to clear after 3-4days, or is it really necessary to wetsand/reapply base and then clear it?

    Thanks!

Since some paint experts will hopefully answer the question I would like to add part (b) and ask if multiple coats of clearcoat can be used to achieve "depth"?

A year after painting my car ,I added flames , and I had to clear coat most of the car again. I have had no problems now two years later. I don't think it should be a problem to clear coat your engine compartment.

It needs to be scuffed and recoated with a couple of coats of the DBC base, there is a possiable chance of no adhesion of the clear to base , and clear may peal off . But you might have alright luck just clearing it , as the suns UV rays wont be attacking it like an outside panel.

But if it was me I would scuff and spray 2 coats of base , then let flash and shoot your clear !

Darn, I just wasted my base coat then... I guess I'll bite the bullet.

If you know that your going to go beyond the 24 hr time, then spray a coat of DBU 500. This will allow more time. You will have scuff it ,but not rebase it. Kina like a clear basecoat.

I wouldnt reccomend spraying DBU 500 over DBC Base, use DBC 500 instead .
And FYI you can also buy a catylist for DBC makes it dry quicker and helps eliminate tiger striping and mottling of the DBC base when cleared .
It makes it like the DBU BC/CC line. But once its been catylized it will only stay sprayable for a short length of time , cant be saved like uncatylized DBC .
