Flat Scratching?
I have a question for anyone that has experience with using flat black paint on their hot rods or John Deere Blitz Black specifically if possible...
I noticed that when I painted the interior of my truck (dash, doors, etc) the paint would scratch really easily like leave a white mark or a dull scratch. I don't mean that it indented in the paint or nothing but I mean it left marks. I used good paint too even though it's out of a can (5 bucks a can) and then even used 99 cent cans and they all do it.
I wan't to paint my truck in flat black MAYBE but if it will scratch like this then I am going to stay away from it then.
Thanks for any info on this.www.streamlineautocare.com

Flats are always easy to scratch. Might be better to use a gloss black with a flattening agent and a spray gun, would be a lot more durable.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

how long did you leave it dry, the implement paint i used on my frame took about 3 days before i felt that is was really dry, it doesnt seem to scratch easy now.
oops, i read daves thread and i realized that i got semi-gloss on. flat black always seems a little powdery and rough therefore easy to scratch to me.Last edited by 53 Chevy5; 05-08-2005 at 09:42 PM.

53 Chevy, one time on the first coat on the dash I let it dry for a day and a half then went and scratched it and did it again and I waited for a afternoon now and it scratches... Maybe that's it. Oh and that is with the good spray can, the other stuff like the high temp stuff, the 99c stuff, and krylon all scratch even after 2 weeks. Maybe I should go with a gloss paint job on this truck. I don't know WHAT color to do it now. Sucks that I can't or don't know how to use photoshop anymore.
I wish I had that 53 Chevy truck too so I can have that as a plain ol Jalopy type hot rod to experiment with like on paint jobs, chopping the top, etc.
Anymore info is still appreciated!
Also thank you Dave and 53. You guys seem to always help me out a ton.www.streamlineautocare.com

Ok I see what you mean. I need to find some pictures of some John Deere Blitz Black. I remember the one's I have seen before were like a semi flat black and looked good. A guy on hotrod forums before had the John Deere Blitz Black on his 55 and it looked sweet with all the chrome work done and looked real good.
I need to look for more idea's on the color now too. Now sure if I want to go with the flat black. Reason I want to go with JD is because the price. I don't have no 1000 bucks for JUST materials or not even 800, etc.
Thanks for anymore info, comments, oppinions such as what color you think would look good, etc.www.streamlineautocare.com

If you use rattle cans to paint it, then every time you get a scratch, you just give it a little shot of paint and it's good as newLast edited by techinspector1; 05-08-2005 at 11:57 PM.

Yeah Tech, until you already used two more cans (10 bucks) to cover them up again. By the end of the summer I will have about 10 inches of spray paint on the darn thing if I keep doing this. lolwww.streamlineautocare.com

On the last page in my gallery, there is a 32 5-window highboy painted flat black. This is the "high-end" solution. This car has a single stage catalyzed black urethane with PPG flattener added. I used the formula for totally flat. I tried the semi-gloss formula on a 32 pickup, but had trouble with the uniformity of the finish. The total flat looked great! I haven't heard from him, so I assume it's doing well. The repairability is something I haven't dealt with yet....but it won't be 99 cents! I think the flat black will always be a problem when it's time for repairs. You sure can't sand and buff your problems away!
