Pearl paint???
I would like to paint my truck red. either the 2003 viper red or the original red form 1970 F100. It is called candy apple red, but i know it isnt a real candy.
Question is, I told my paint supplier i didnt want a plain old red, i wanted to spice it up a little. he said to use pearl in the first coat of clear.
I have know idea what color of pearl or what the effect would be. I thought about some gold pearl in the first coat.
From what i understand truck will still be red in shop, but in direct sunlight it will give off a gold luster while still having a deep red base.
True or untrue?
Also plan on using ppg omni bc/cc. any known problems with that.
Alot of local guys like it, say it takes a few more coats though.
I am a first time complete painter, i helped my Dad years ago.
Never did one by myself.
Thanks everyone for listening to an ametuer ramble.

ok spray down the red of your choice,, then get som dbc 500.. mix in your desired amount of pearl then reduce it 1:1.. the dbc 500 is a clear base works great for effects.. then clear coat it.. if you want you could add the pearl to your first coat of clear but I always put it in the 500.. this way you can put as many coats as you'd like to get your desired effect if you put it in the clear you might end up having more build than desired.. but either will work if you put in in clear coat i'd suggest doing a spray out card to figure amount of pearl desired so that way you can do it in one coat.. hope i helped and didn't confuseCHOP IT UP!!!!!!!

watch out to much pearl in the red paint makes it look pink and have seen this a lot and if you need to match the paint this is not fun you can put the pearl rigth in the base red this makes it better to match or find a red that you like there is a lot of them look at some paint chip books a lot of the newer cars and truck have pearl in the base . if you add pearl do not add to much blue makes pink you could try red pearl make some test shots to look at it

The only thing that worries me about shooting pearl over the top of red, is the repairability. House of color makes a "Red Pearl", "Cherry Pearl", and "Raspberry pearl". I'd suggest you look at these, as they could be spot painted more successfully than the other way.

ok im getting scared.
I would like something like the the 94 mustang laser red.
Have seen a few envoy with a nice shade also.
i wish i knew more about this.
I just want it to look nice when finished. I smoothed all the body seams and removed the drip rail,
What is a good length of homemade long board. i was thinking about a 3 foot 2x4 leveled on a plane. Or is that to long?
I have done alot of reading about guide coats and hope to have this thing straight when all done. just not flat. bed sides have some natural curve to them.
What do they mean by tri coat, paintscratch.com has color codes for most vehicles. some of the colors i like are refered to as tri coat. very afraid of tiger striping.
Just on a budget and want to have the pride of doing it myself.
But know there are certain corners you just cant cut. kind of like puting 3 thousand dollar heads on a stock bottom end.
thanks everyone for the help.

if you make your self a long boad .on how long than the paper 3 m makes nices stuff you need some thing that feels good in your hands. and corners need to be soft or you will dredge the body up and lots of guide coats and cross sand the body panels try not to hide heavy sand scratches with primer and jack the body up so you are not bent down

Tricoats are candies. That is a basecoat, a tint coat, and the clear. I'm not suprised you like candies. They are my favorite too. Most of these use a colored basecoat similar to the tint color, so it is harder to get a stiped look.
AS far as risking the cost of materials, that is always a risk to a new painter, and shouldn't stop him. Worst case scenario, he blows $1000 in materials, and has to start over. The cost here in Tucson for a nice paint job is in the $5000-6000 range. That gives him more than a couple chances to make it "passable".

Tri-coat is 3 stages of painting.. your base coat,, a mid coat, which is a transparent base, and then clear coat... if you did like i was previously stating by adding gold pearl to the dbc500 you would have a tri-stage paint jobCHOP IT UP!!!!!!!

toredor red is the color of my father in laws truck, a little dark for my taste. but not bad.
Tirerack.com lets you choose vehicles by color also.
I will try and find the copper red.
that tri coat sounds likE a decent set up.

tri coat more times a round more chance for dirt or hitting it with the hose and more money and harder to repair try looking at base coat clear coat and keep away from custom stuff

I don't think a tricoat is best for him, which is why I suggested the HOK basecoat/clearcoat, which I also said was easier to repair.
Custom or factory...what's the difference? I don't know if there are many two step red pearls from the factories, but if there are, both they, and HOK are readily available, and virtually the same to apply. Any cost difference is probably small.

custom some thing that is not on a paint scale. and something mix by looking at it by dumping pearl in the clear and stuff like air psi thining dry time how many coats of pearl and how many coats of base and try to match if something blows up. if mix by his paint supplier go of it. just trying to cut down on the veriables and tying to keep him away from many coats of stuff and yes there is a fine line from custom and stock stuff
Thank you Roger. .
