Actually, I've found that when most guys attempt it themselves, 90% will come looking for a pro the next time, and making statements like "I'll never do that again"!
over the years I have bought many paint guns that were just junk, they range from a no name at all to some high end name brands, I have trashed a few, but I guess thats life. you live and learn, right?
but I do buy the cheepy paint guns for a primer gun and use a binks and Sata for paints and clears.
Im not sure about all cheep guns but with the lower end sharp guns you can get them to spray pretty good.
and like most everyone I wished that paint was cheep. its not!
my first job out of highschool was working in a small local body shop. and it is very hard to compete with shops that can paint a car for $199. heck even when I paint my own cars it cost me more than double that and my labor is FREE!
now there is some logic behind the different quality paints . and I try to explain it to my customers this way.
when I paint a car I break it down to fit in one of 4 stages >
stage 1. basic sanding , dent and rust repair, primer , masking and paint prep. the best deal I can find on low end paints. COST LESS.
stage 2 includes stage 1 and adds high quality primer , more attention to detail of sanding and body work. remove trim and ext along with masking for a much cleaner looking result. regular paint .COST A LITTLE MORE!
stage 3 includes stage 2 and adds the highest quality primers and sealers. a little better grade paint . cost more!
stage 4 includes stage 3 and includes highest quality paints and I give a lifetime warrenty . show quality!
now 9 out of 10 customers would pick the lowest deal. and you know they always gripe about how the paint looks after a year or so when the paint is all fadded and dull. they comeback and expect me to stand good on a cheep paint they chose!
I tell them . you get what you pay for and you are told what you get for X amount of money.
in my book lowend paint is like having bad sex, it might feel good but you never brag to you'r friends about it do you?
