    First time painter today

Well guys I finish painted something for the first time today. As a part of my engine swap project I wanted to clean up some of the scratches on my inner fenderwells. They are the same color as the car. I had the fenders off to make the swap engineering easier. I prep sanded to smooth everything, then sprayed it with a filler primer and finish sanded it. This has taken a while because with the car up on jacks I have to do my painting outside. Had to wait for decent weather. Today it was nearly 70 and calm so I took a day of work, and with coaching from a painter friend I was able to lay on a pretty decent coat of paint. Only had a couple runs and just 1 bug, they will be very hard to find. The fenderwells came out nice and shiney so I am quite pleased! Now I will let them cure for a couple days and install them. I have a whole new confidence, not ready to tackle a whole car yet, that will come later. I have been tackling a number of things I have never done before on this project, and so far they are working out well.

    Thanks Guys!

Denny, that paint code is a secret! But for you, my friends, I will share it. Just don't paint any 53 Studebakers with it! This is the way it was described to me by the original builder:

Paint type: PPG Concept Direct Gloss,
Paint mix formula for quart DMC 917 740 parts, DMC 911 up to 1050 parts
Paint mix formula for gallon DMC 917 2960 parts, DMC 911 up to 4200 parts.

I gave that to the local PPG dealer and it made sense to him. He mixed it up and it matched perfect. I tell you it is not cheap, a quart was $98 jobber.

Wow, I like that truck! The thing I liked about that Concept paint is it dries to a brilliant gloss, without any color sanding or clear. The paint on the rest of my car is 4+ years old and I get so many comments on it.

Can't wait to see your truck when it's done

From one first time painter to another.......... Look'n GOOD!!!!!

One word of advise DON'T use the funnys to mask your parts........... It'll take you twice as long to get it done......... unless your a speed reader....

I'm sure the true pro painters on this forum may disagree with this, but I have always used a touch up gun to shoot most of my suspension pieces, etc. I find I can control the flow easier than a full sized gun, and they use like 1/4 the amount of paint.

We just bought and used a gravity fed touchup gun to shoot some suspension stuff, and I will probably never go back to the old style cup variety. Clean up is much easier.

Obviously, I wouldn't use a touchup gun to shoot an entire car, but I have done even frames with one, and I like it better. I amazes me how little paint you waste, too.

I'm certainly no pro painter, but this works for me.

    JMO,

    Don

PS, Buy a roll of masking paper too, it is cheap, and works better than newpaper.
