How's this quote look for cheapie job?

hey guys, my uncle will be back in a few months from asia, I am using his truck right now to move the fenders and other hotrod stuff around. it's a 79 ford F150 custom long bed. body is in pretty great condition. but paint is tired. he always talks about having it painted, I was going to do this for him. here's what I got quoted the other day.

place is called Color Glow. they use Sherman Williams urethane paints (don't know what that means)
    for 3 coats of paint
4 hours of prep work feathering chips and other stuff with the sander
    2 year warrantee
upgrade to metallic paint (they had a standard dark blue metallic there that almost exactly matches the original color of the truck, I figure why spend more on color matching).
I think that is it, left the little card at home, price was 479.99. (that includes tax on some of the materials and some other fees I want to say something environmental?)

for another hundred bucks I can get a clear coat, but I didnt' know how necessary that is. I don't need a fancy paint job on it, this is the work truck we haul all sorts of things in, if its too nice he'll be worried about messing it up. same time I don't want to get a crappy job and have it go to crap too early.

    Thanks for your opinions guys.

As the owner of a MAACO franchise who also uses Sherwin Williams products, that sounds about right, all except the upcharge for the metallic content. Just make sure that you specify which chips, scratches, and dings are being taken care of. I usually go over the car with the customer and a grease pencil in hand and mark exactly what we are fixing and taking care of. As for the urethane paints comment, they are doing a single stage paint job without the clear coat. Personally, if they are not using a full base coat clear coat system (Ultra7000 under the Sherwin Williams paint banner), save the extra $100.

awesome, thanks man, I was going to go to MAACO, they're closer to my house, but when I called each place to find out their baselines the guy was a lot nicer at the other place. one of my coworkers handles the fleet vehicles and he had one painted there and was happy with it.

yeah, 30 dollar charge to upgrade to the metallic. I'll go around the truck with him then. the body is in really good shape, one ding in the rear just above the taillight, I am gonna take care of that myself. plus taking off bumpers and trim, I figure rather than having them just tape it I'll get better results if I strip a bunch of it first. I have a D8 so could do some work myself, but don't know how so figure the 80 bucks or whatever he's charging me for that is worth it.

now I just need to wait till my friend gets his tractor back so we can use the bucket to pull the toolbox out, I hate the thought of emptying it first and trying to get everything back in there.

Hey Bill, can I bring my 34 to you when I need a complete new paint job????

My wife really hates the current color. She's the only one who does, but she counts more than the others and I don't have to live with them.

    Just some suggestions ..........
    1:
Remove as much weather striping as possible or feasable, nothing like new door seals and window rubber to make it real nice. Not sure if that quote includes painting the "jams" or not?

    2:
Remove as much trim as feasable ,the more the better ,the same as weather stripping goes for the trim, this is the number one spot a paint job will peel from, soo as much removal as possible helps reduce this.

    3:
Take little parts off ,such as emblems and side mirrors etc and use this time to clean them up and get new gasketts ,etc, they are cheap and help keep the paint from peeling, same goes for the door locks ,remove them and clean + oil them, the key that has slowly disapeared over the years is inside that lock as a fine metalic powder.

    4:
Take it to the car wash and wash the under side of the chassis, use degreaser etc ,before taking it in to be painted.

The more little things that you do like this ,the better the final product will be ,the weather stripping on the door windows and the windshield gaskett are a little bit of money ,but door seals and the smaller stuff is cheap, the washing cleaning and removal of small parts is virtually free.

    Hope this helps.......
Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

Isn't that the truth, you might say it's the final word, I've tried for almost 40 years but "Wife's Rule" who ever does not believe that is not married!!!

I wanted to paint the 1951 Plymouth silver quite a few years ago, I painted the garnish moldings silver, she didn’t like it, the rest of the car is still green.

I’m not WHIPPED she is just the BOSS.
