    5star Xtreme Primer

I went to the local autobody store and asked for an epoxt primer and he gave me "5 Star Extreme". I've been reading up on it and it seems to be a hybrid epoxy/acrylic. Has anybody else used this, will it stand up as well as a straight epoxy primer?

I have some sections that I used POR15 and POR15 tie coat primer and I'm wondering if I can spray over that as well so everything in a uniform coat of epoxy then I'll be applying Lizard Skin.

Any input??? I haven't had much luck searching the internet.

    Thanks,
    Sean

Just another non name brand primer, the product sheet shows it to be usable over the standard surfaces and when mixed properly will also work as a filler or sealer. Looks like fairly hi solids, should make a good fill and prime, too.

Never heard of it or used it, no idea how the adhesion is, but if the product sheet is reliable it should be ok... Certainly not top of the line, but probably an acceptable primer for this application. I'm not near as fussy as the pro painters though, might want to wait for some of them to check in on it....

    Thanks Dave,

I phoned the POR15 rep and he said there should be no problem spraying it over the POR15 Tie-Coat primer and the rep from Lizard skin said it will be a good base to apply the coatings to. So that made me happy.

I went out with the intention of doing the underside and body panels where I am putting the Lizard Skin and I ended up doing the whole interior except the roof. I found a 38"x68" sliding rag-top for that .

It sprayed real easy and came out nice and smooth using a 1.8 tip and 30 psi at the gun (HVLP). A lot easier than the urathane I used on my frame. I mixed it 4:1:2 as per the directions for primer sealer so am I correct in thinking this is ready for topcoat now. I've only done the underside and interior so I don't need a high fill.

With most epoxies, if it's been on the car more then 24 hours I usually go over it with some 400 wet before I paint..... Might not be required but it just seems to me that if the primer surface is "open", it should help the adhesion??????

I'm with ya on that. I'm gonna scuff everywhere before I apply the Lizard skin and just before I paint the interior. I figured that this will keep it from rusting in the mean time. I might do the whole exterior soon as well, I'm starting to see a couple of my hand prints on the raw metal.

I'm not looking forward to all the taping I'm gonna have to do before the Lizard splatter starts, I hear it's a bear to get off.

A little tip.... Apply a couple of coats of 2K primer within the recoat window. Then when you get to actually working the piece, the 2K sands a lot easier and you can block it for a smooth surface for the top coats.
