hey, im new at restoration. i got a 4x4 truck, what should i do to to the frame ( with cab on and box off ) and shocks, drivetrain, ect??? i heard to sandblast and use gravelgard. but that just sounds to easy.

If you JUST sandblast it you will need to re sandblast it before the restoration is over. you should sandblast it and apply a good primer with good paint, I have seen people use Engine paint because it has ceremic in it and makes a long lasting paint finish even if off roading.

Matts correct, y'all will jus have one chipped to shit paint job if ya dont apply a good etc primer as a base.... i have used a variety of stuff before..all depending on what it cost at the time.. 2K works fine, but ideally i like to use some sort of stove enamel,only prob is y'all have to get that sucker pretty warm to cure it.
but...its frickin bulletproof once it has cured.... as with all paint jobs, its all in your prep..if ya dont remove the rust n all that crud properly, it'll flake n chip hella easy...take ya time n get some decent paint n y'all cant go wrong.

Believe it or not I painted my frame with rustoleum. It's pretty friggin rugged for can paint. I had to use a grinder to get it off to weld stuff on the frame. I def agree with greaser though , its got to be clean for it to stick.

What is the best compound to fill welds with? Thanks all.

I used this stuff called POR-15 it's sposed to never rust once coated, only thing is you gotta top coat it as it's U.V. sensitive
you brush it on and it looks terrible till the next morning.. They got a website with lots of info......This stuff is as close to powder coat as you can get in a can...
