What is your favourite ol' skool flames or scallops picture?
Will be painting my '51 Merc 4Dr Sport Sedan and am looking for pictures / ideas for flames or scallops from the 50/60's that are attention-getting, yet hopefully reasonably simple or straightforward for an amateur to accomplish. Alternatively, anyone know of a good North American source of fullsize templates or precut "maskings" to accomplish the same? Thanks

Big wheelie, I would suggest scallops. Flames may look simple, but there are a lot of subtle elements that have to be right, or they will look amaturish.
Find an example of scallops on your body style, then you can mark the approximate location of the ends, and use a tape measure or yardstick to make them parrallel to the rocker panel and each other, and to keep them evenly spaced. Success will come a lot easier with the scallops....and you will have a little more unique vehicle, since flames have been so common.
If you are daring, I would suggest a fine 'flake, as that is a coming trend, but dates back to an early era like scallops do.
I'll see what pictures I have saved.

Thanks HotRodDaddy and Jay/HotrodPaint
Great examples and what I was looking for Jay!! Thanks for the advice on flames and suggestion towards scallops -- starting to lean heavier that way myself for the reasons you gave. The flat black with the red scallops is very interesting. Given 49-51 Mercs have that body contour from the fender onto the door I would likely like to emphasis or make use of it.
What if proportionately shortened the length of the scallops from the wheel well, in order to then somehow extend the scallop on the top of the fender back and along that body contour on the door?
Somewhat similar perhaps to how on the beige car with rust scallops has that very thin top fender scallop that extends back and follows the body contour along the door? Likely expand the hood scallops down to hood lip, and in width by adding one more "sprite" on the vertical slope/side of the hood?
HotRodDaddy -- no, car wasn't from the PBR. Although has a bit of history as was owned in the late 70's by PolyDor Records here in Canada who had the rights to the sound track album for the movie "Grease" (with Travolta / Newton-John) and used the car for promotion and marketing of album sales. Hence the wording "Grease" painted on the fender skirts in the font/style as used on the album cover / movie titles. I guess the picture in my profile is so small one couldn't read what it says. Would be interested in your two-tone if you can find a picture.
