new paint job
I have a 55 chevy which was painted 1997 Chrysler Dark Rosewood pearl, base coat clear coat using pga paint and Since it is a 7 year old paint job and beginning to show wear, I would like to repaint it a different color. Not being a painter can I paint over what I have or do Ihave to take it down to bare metal?Keep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!

chevy 37,
It really depends on how many MILLs ( thickness) of paint is on it now.
10 Mills is really the limit for a paint job lasting for any length of time, after that it will chip easy, start cracking, top layer will soak up & loose its shine, ect.
You can drive your car to the local PPG Jobber & they can check the Millage for you( with a MILL Gauge) to give you an idea how thick the paint is.
If the body is in decent shape ( meaning not alot of dents) you could block sand dry with 220 grit sand paper to cut alot of that old paint off & in the process making your panels straight !
Then reprime with 4-5 coats of PPG's K-36 let set a couple of days & sand with a wet block with 400-600 grit paper.
then seal & shoot your prefered flavor of KOLOR.( This is what I would reccomend)
Or you can just DA sand the whole thing down & wipe & shoot
just like Earl Schibe or Macco
Getting a quality paint job is not an easy task , it requires alot of work, and elbo grease.

Spray tech The 55 has no dents, cracks, or whatever. The paint is just beginning to fade and I never really liked the color to begin with. My problem is when I start painting , after about half way down the vehicle, the paint starts running. I try to slow my strokes down but then it begins to clog up at the nozzle. Rember I've had no real experience painting a vehicle, but I'm going to paint the 55 myself. It still will look better than a $19.99 Job.Keep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!

Chevy 37 ,
Do you know if the car was taken down to the metal & built back up with this paint job thats on it?
If so I would say go with this option:
If the paint is still in good shape like you say , but just fadeing, you could water block sand with 400 grit till all the shine is gone from the paint , then seal it and spray it.
I would also reccomend PPG's Base Coat /Clear Coat in either DBU or DBC .( Very forgiving)
DBU uses a reactive reducer & it will harden & drys faster & easier to work with.
DBC uses the same reducer as the clear will use so this will help cut some cost.( you can also purchase a base hardner for this product , that makes it like DBU , but then the cost is the same as if you went DBU.
Then use DCU 2021 Clear , its a high solids 2 coat clear.
When you get closer to painting I will give ya some pointers if need be

Many of the long tube cast headers I've run across had a relief ground on the back side for starter bolt clearance. I just trimmed the bolt on mine. On these new shorty's, they eliminated the...
