i want to clean up the frame and paint it. it still has the body on but motor and tranny are out. the frame rails are covered in nasty gunk. what i would i use to first clean up the frame, then how would i paint the frame with the body on it and which paints and primers should i use. What steps would i use also? Thanks,

    Steam Cleaner...

I would use a steam cleaner or at least a high power pressure washer with some good de-greaser... This process will also strip off any old paint as well...

As far as painting goes, I would recommend an epoxy primer before you start to paint...

    Hope that helps...

age isn't everything CSF, I'm 29 and can wrench circles around most people. It's because I was taught by the REAL Hot rodders who were around "back in the day", before all this gold-card catalog pansy billet wussy hot rod crowd existed.

We build our rods the old fashioned way, make our own parts, do our own engine, trans, fram, suspension, leadwork,etc...

    And as I always say...

are you in the city ? if not push it out side and call a mobile sandblaster, plastic cover the car body and wshield very good . that will clean it to bare steel , then a self etch primer, then a good quality high build primer , sand and spray . that is the correct steps .as far a type of paint try to use a urethane .
i dont thin you can buy imron and if you get it , it will chip easy .
    plus it stinks like hell.
    hope this helps

Without a whole lot more work, you could unbolt and dissassemble the subframe, have it sandblasted, clean up the welds, repalace all the worn busings and joints, paint it and put it back together. I know, easy to say when I'm not the one doing the work or spending the $$$ on parts. It does make for a very first rate looking job.

Thanks for all of your opinions and options you have left me with to try out and i will let you know the outcome. I just might unbolt the subframe but who knows. Thanks again
