A true candy would generally have a base color, like gold and then the transparent paint sprayed on top would give the candy effect, I would say unless your existing base color is that of the base color of the candy your going to need to reshoot base first otherwise the candy effect would not even be close to what your seeing in a sample.
I don't know if I helped or not! Practice and a good spray gun definetly helps on those type of paints, otherwise the dreaded tiger striping is very evident in candies. Best of luckWhy is mine so big and yours so small, Chrysler FirePower

Candy is the hardest of any paints to apply properly. Like Matt said, to get the acquired effect you are looking for a base coat is need for candy colors. You can put a white base down which will make the color really bright. If you use a silver or gold base, you will have a metallic look under the color. But in any case, you do need to have a base.
And lastly.....you can't just scuff and paint candy. The metal MUST be smooth as a babys ass. Candy is so transparent that any minor scuff will show thru.
Remember............a paint job is 95% preparation and 5% painting.

39 Chevy may have been referring to a single stage "candy" not a true candy which as you say, is a multi step process..
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.
