Clear in time will peal off no matter how good the product, paint doenst stick for very long on slick surfaces . Might stick for 6 months , or could last 2-3 years.
I'd hate to say how many corvette wheels I have had to redo for warrenty when the clear was popping off, and these cars were only 10 months to 2 years old.
I havent tried the new Zoops aluminum sealer but have head good results about the product.

If you were using DTL16 that was for their lacquer
product, and yes you can still get it but it also depends on your location , because of the paint laws.
I think the new Base coat/Clear coat products are more forgiving as I have painted about every kind out there.
The base is easy to spray as it doesnt go on shiny , thats what the clear is for , and also for protection , and sealing off the base. If you get a run it sand it a tad and buff it( just make sure you have enough clear on it so you dont sand through ) . It makes it alot easier as if you went through the metallic layer in a lacquer or enamel job you were re painting it .

Oh and just a thought : I have seen where guys have thier polished aluminum Clear powder coated and works for a LONG time , might check your area and see if someone powder coats parts .

Yeah if you are going to clear coat something then PC (powder coating) is the way to go man. It will last for a really long time, just make sure you tell the people that change your tires to be careful with them and it will be ok. I am going to be getting my powder coating machine in a couple weeks and am going to be doing lots of stuff with rims and all for my dirt bikes and things like that and maybe a bit of other things for people for a little bit of extra money. Let us know how those rims come out though man.
