Thread: High Build Primer?? Vs. Primer

Hey guys I had a fellow friend talking to me the other day and we were discussing some of PPG's High build primer... He seen that I had a few waves in the body while I was wet sanding and said that PPG's High Build Primer would fix it up a little. Whats the going rate for this stuff<usually? and how much would I need to paint a full size FORD truck, I usually figure about a gallon.

Oh and SPRAY TECH I know you'll be reading this so I thought I'd through it in, With that CONCEPT PAINT HOW MUCH WILL IT TAKE TO PAINT A FULL SIZE TRUCK, I THINK A GALLON WILL DO IT AFTER I MIX ALL MY STUFF UP, I PLANED ON ADDING A LITTLE CLEAR INTO THE LAST MIX. THANKS MAN YOU'VE BEEN A LIFE SAVER.

PPG's K -36 and NCP 271 Are High solids and High build primers, I use the 271 as it has metal etching qualities in it.
Its not cheap stuff it doesnt require reducer , Just primer and hardner......I am sorry I dont know the price as I just order it when I need it as I dont see the bill as it goes straight to the office to get a purchase order. I would say from 175-250 bucks for both thats a gallon of primer and 1 quart of hardner.

A gallon of Concept of color should be enough as it will mix to around 6 quarts sprayable. and I would just buy a quart of clear and 8oz of hardner , what catylist are you using ? DU-5, 6 or 7? or DX 61?
for the concept color , make sure the catylist for color and clear are the same as then it will be compatiable to mix together....

Du-5 it has 4:1:2 mix ratio and has a pot life of 2-4 hours and has a longer square footage coverage, the sq. foot coverage with Du-5 is 550-560 compared to DX 61 which is at 518-634. thanks

I like using DU-5 as it flows alot better as well.
You can mix concept color 2parts color/2 parts hardner (DU-5)/1 part DT reducer , makes it flow better as this is how I spray it .........Its not the High Solids mix ratio though.
Its pretty hard to get as when its all sold out of the warehouse we will be using DCX61 which i hate.

Are you going to use 2002 clear with the color ?

I dont use the concept clears over my DBU/DBC, as I like the Global clear alot better , plus it doesnt have a solvent pop problem , and it rubs like butter

No I was going to use the DCU 2021, i can't remember why I choose this but I have it marked with a dot beside it. I think I remeber looking it up or something but just forgot why, there was some reason though. I printed off the tech sheet on Concept from that website you gave me. thanks alot!!!

I have chosen Red Metallic Pearl, though I am not sure about the Pearl part yet!!

2021 is a good clear as thats what I used in concept on a ton of warrenty GM completes when they had the delamination on all their trucks, vans and suburbans in the 90's .
Are you going to have the pearl added to the color or are you going to put it in clear and go over the color ?

No I think IF I do do the pearl I'll mix it into the color itself, I heard it gives a real nice DEPTHY look. Still not for sure If I wan't it or not though!!!

Depending on what color of pearl you add to the color, it will change it , drastically if you add several parts of pearl. if you use white pearl it will turn it more pink, if you add gold pearl it will turn more orange, blue pearl more purple , ect......
PPG has alot of powdered pearls in several colors.

Have them mix a pint in the met.red your are thinking and them have them mix another pint and add how many parts of pearl you want , shake them up then pop the lids and compare them.

When they are mixing the pearl into the pint color make sure they are watching how many parts are added so when they mix your gallon they can formulate how much is needed to achieve the look
with the pint formula.

If they mix it on a touch mix the should be able to print it out on paint can labels.
Make sure you get a break down of the formula as you may need it later on if you need more color mixed, this will help for a good color match .
