I would suggest you get a trans with the '39 and later gear set. They sure shift better and are quieter. The gears can be put in the earlier case but the later top with the 91A shift fork must be used. I tried to make the early top shift the later gears and it was a disaster. You can get an open drive trans from a truck also.

So, let me get this right..

if i get an 81A trans case, and use the 39+ gear set..
which years is the 91a shift selector fork assembly from?? any particular ford models??
whats the scoop with the truck trans??? exscuse my ignorance but ,'open drive'??

    thanks

The 91A shift fork is used with the '39 and up gears. It was put in 39 and later top shift trans. The correct case would be a 78- case. It was used thru 48 in the pick ups. I have found the gears in a lot of cases that they did not start out in. It has always been a good swap. The gears can be identified by the two toothed rings on each side of the shift sleeve. The early shift system only had one. The shift sleeve has the fork groove all the way towards the rear on the 39 up gear sets.

You can use the 48 gears. You still would need a 78- case and a 81- top with the 91A fork.
