Billy zz,
They'll work fine. My son has a 9" rear out of a '77 T-Bird in his sedan with 2.75 gears. They aren't great for launching at the drag strip, especially if you have tall tires, but they are a good highway gear for mileage. I have 2.79 gears in my coupe (8" Ford rear) and they are fine. Again, they are highway gears. If I was going drag racing on a regular basis I would try to find a lower gear, but for cruising around these are fine and give decent mileage. Both of our cars are fenderless '31 Fords on homebuilt frames with 350 Chevys.Jim

Billy zz,
Glad to hear you are making progress, I know the problem of more time than money, and I wish I had more time.
J Rob,
You don't mind if I call you J Rob do you. What kind of milage are you getting with those gears?

Nah. You can call me that. Or just J. Or Jim...
Anyway, I don't think my son has ever checked the mileage on his sedan, but my coupe gets about 18.5 on the road. Probably 16 or so around town. It's not great mileage, but I've had worse. My engine is a .030 over 350 with hypereutectic flat top pistons and some old open chamber (76 cc) LT-1 heads (1.94/1.60 valves). Intake is Edelbrock Torker II with an old Quadra-jet carb. The cam is a Crane Energizer. I don't remember the specs on it, but it was the most radical cam I could use and still keep the stock torque converter. The transmission is a bone stock Turbo 350 out of an early 70s Monte Carlo and the ignition is an old fashioned points/coil distributor.
Probably, if I put a dual plane manifold on it with a freshly rebuilt carb, HEI ignition and maybe a different cam, I could boost the mileage some...Jim

Your chevy truck is coming along great. Always liked the early chevy and with what you had to start with, you've come along way. I'm running 2:76 in my 9" ford rear and get aroung 21 MPG. After I had the heads reworked the engine breath alot better and my mileage went from 16 to 21. Even with the work done on the little 305 that's putting out 303 HP and 313 lbs of torque, Cannot spin the wheels with those high gears Fogure I save on money for tires using those gears, because if I some 3:55 in there, I d probably go thru 2 sets in one summerKeep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!

Looking good. Nice to see a Chevy of that vintage. Did that one have alot of wood? Always heard that gm used more wood than ford. I'll be watching this one. I've gotten to almost like the trucks over the cars..........

Billy,
I hope those boat seats aren't the plastic ones. Would hate the see them after a good launch. Besides, I doubt they would pass inspection.

billy,
Was mainly thinking of a hard launch; the plastic seats I have in my driftboat if mounted in a car would break for sure with a good hard launch.
