ok
I unhooked the small wire and all others from the selenoid. The only two wires I had were the large starter and the battery. Still turned over like before. The Tinker

Hi John. If the starter he is using has the one wire running to the starter, if the wire was melted to the header, the wiring would start smoking. The starter probably wouldn't even engage. The voltage would be running straight to ground. He wants to make sure the small wire from the switch is un hooked when checking the solenoid.drive it like ya stole it

yeah
Ahhhh...Good hint. I will use the tester instead. Tap the selenoid to see if it disengages. The Tinker

The battery, starter and used to be the selenoid are new. The wiring diagram is helpful,It is wired right noe with the starter and battery separated on two different posts. i will replace the selenoid and check the diagram to see if it is correct. Alternator should still carry the engine. That question is still on the table.
the alt. should carry the motor after you get it running and the starter disengsged. if your starter is staying engaged and wont stop turning, then stop worrying about the alt. how you gonna keep the motor running to check the alt. if youer running the motor with the starter engaged then you are gonna mess up the starter and flywheel. until you get the motor starting and running on its own forget about the alt. take it off the motor and put it on the floor and fix your starter, than put the alt back on the motor and check it. forget the alt, all its doing now is confusing you more.Mike

Well, don't laugh, but this will give you an inside look. The spring pushes the plunger off the contacts. But, if they weld themselves, the spring can not seperate the contacts. Tapping sometimes will jar the weld loose.Mike

if youer hooking up the wires right then you need to be looking at the starter. take ohm meter and check the big bolt going into the staeter and make sure its not shorted to the starter case.Mike

Starter isn't the problem,I'm pretty sure of that. It isn't continually attempting to start, although with the selenoid stuck,it theoretically should. But,problem is only located between the selenoid and alternator. Just want to make sure that the alternator is going to charge the battery. If it won't carry the motor's load, then will it charge the battery? If the battery becomes weak it can burn the alt up. Don't want this to happen is all.The Tinker

I think your missing the whole point. The starter circuit is one circuit. The charging circuit is another circuit.

If the solenoid contacts are stuck, that is a fact that the starter will crank.
(But,problem is only located between the selenoid and alternator.)
Not true. Look at the drawing for the wiring. You really need to seperate the 2 circuits, or you will never figure this out.
ps did you get my drawing?Mike

Hooooleeee CRAP!! Look guys...I have NEVER seen this before. I replaced the selenoid, wired it to diagram, which was the way it was wired originally. Hooked up the positive and...yeah!!! no sparks or false starting. Problem solved, right? Not!! Heard a whining from the engine. I assumed that it was the alternator trying to catch the battery up and loading down. So,i went to turn the truck off and the engine quit. The battery began to spark at the terminals and both terminals began to smoke. i disengaged the positive and came in here to say...WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON??????Help me,guys, help me.The Tinker
