pull the coil wire out so the motor wont start, then put the starter wire back on the sol. and try to start the motor. do it a few times and see if the starter release every time. be ready to pull the bat post off if the starter dont release, go do that and come back and tell me what it did.

No other battery on hand big enough to poer this big block. Just the one from my own s-10,and buddy, I ain't chancing that. Will have to wait until morning when i can take the starter and battery back to NAPA to have them both tested. I'll let them know that I bought them all together and that should get me a replacement on anything bad. By the way. You've got an s-10. How many hours do you give the replacement of the front main seal,if i don't pull the motor and just strip the radiator and pullys?

Just a few things i either missed or something. 1) is it the EFI 5.0? If it is, I had the same problem. Turned out there are two different designs of alternator for that motor. You may want to look into this. Also, streets is right about the pull and die syndrome. Unless you own an AMC. We're dinosaurs. Finally, ther was just a massive recall on the ignition module for the ford V8s. Causes cut-outs, hard starting, ignition problems, you may want to ask your local ford garage about this.

The recall affects 92,000 of its 2003 S-Series Super Duty Trucks and Excursion SUVs for a ground problem on the battery cable that could cause problems starting or melt other nearby parts;this is from ford

No, im afraid your mistaken john. I got the notice in the mail from ford listing a wide variety of vehicles with the module on the distributor style solinoid. This was focused mostly on the mid-late 80s and early 90s vehicles. I'll have to find it tonight.

this is what ford sent me

The Ford Motor Company announced Wednesday a recall of 171,300 cars, light trucks and SUV's for various problems including battery fires and axle glitches.

The recall affects 92,000 of its 2003 S-Series Super Duty Trucks and Excursion SUVs for a ground problem on the battery cable that could cause problems starting or melt other nearby parts; 53,500 fleet class 2003 Crown Victorias and Town Cars for a faulty wheel bearing caused by extreme service that could cause the wheels to squeak or the vehicle to come to a stop; and 25,800 2004 Taurus, Sables and Thunderbirds for an issue with the power seat that could cause it to come loose.

Ford says 35 fires were reported on the trucks and SUVs, but no injuries or accidents have been reported on any of the above-mentioned vehicles.

The trucks and SUV's were built from December 1, 2002, through March 31, 2003, in Ford's Kentucky truck plant.

Dealers have been asked to stop selling and demonstrating the Taurus and Sable models with driver side power seats built from Nov. 17, 2003, through Jan. 15, 2004. The Thunderbirds with driver-side power seats built from Dec. 15, 2003, through Jan. 20, 2004, are involved in the recall.

i dont think ford is worried to much about a truck thats 17 yrs old anyway. but the problem he has, dont have anything to do with the module anyway.
