    Angry pink fluid

well heres the deal, i been getting help on my carb from here , and now that parts great.... but now, for one, i filled up my power steering pump with fluid, later to avail a big puddle under the pwer steering box, the box is definatly got fuild all over the outside... but heres the kicker, the fuild is red in color!? the fluid i poured in wasnt! so i thought is was transmision fluid, witch i cant even find a dipstick for.. but its too far left to be it... got any ideas? its going to be a pain replacing that box..

69chevyman if you are topping off your power steering with the motor running then that's the problem, because when you cut the motor off some of the fluid will drain back into the reservoir and over fill it to the point of pushing it out of the top. crank the car turn the wheels lock to lock a few times, cut the car off and check the fluids. should be a dip stick in the cap. fill it to full without the motor running and then watch for leaks. if you are filling it while its running then is gonna push the excess back out of the top every time. you can also get hurt sticking you hand that close to the belts while the motor is running.

Yeah, what LT1 said. As for running transmission fluid in the power steering box, thats All I use. Works better than the power steering fluid in older vehicles. Also, when filling the power steering fluid, be sure to fill it, cycle the motor(run a few mins) and fill it again. Finally, when changing a hose or pump. the best way to get all the air out of the lines without damage is to raise the front of the car up off the ground, start the motor and slowly turn it from lock to lock. That will remove most of the air bubbles. Top off your power steering fluid and drive

One other thing to consider when looking for the leak is the o-ring on the pressure hose at the pump. Mine got all buggered up and was leaking. I thought it was the pump due to lack of troubleshooting on my part, so I changed the pump. The new pump I bought was just that a pump without the resavour, what a pain to remove the old one and install it on the new pump.
Check that o-ring if you get a chance.
