LS1 to LS2 Swap
Any feedback or has anyone done an LS1 to LS2 swap on a 2002 Z28?

Hot Rod Magazine had an article on the LS2.....last month or so.
Running from memory: knock sensors changed to single sensor on block. Cam position sensor changed to front of engine. Added "missing" bellhousing bolt hole. Added mounting holes but did not eliminate any. Corvette pan is shallower than Camaro but taller than LS1/LS6 Corvette. Intake is now 90mm. BUT the most important thing is.....the new engines are "drive by wire" and dont use a throttle cable.....did the Camaro have a cable or was it wire controlled?
There should be a bunch of articles out soon since this is a straighforward swap.

Here is a really nice presentation on the LS2 by Katech. It is a 17 page .pdf

There is an excellent discussion forum for Gen III Gm motors at
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/
The have a specific LS2-LS7 forum there also. Just a whole bunch of very helpful folks and they have some great FAQs as well. I am already using their good info for an LS1 swap

What are you using for a ECU?

I'm just getting started. My tentative plan is to send the stock one I get with a motor to Speartech and have them do that and the wire harness to my specs. At this point I don't even have a motor yet though. You got any suggestions?

The stocker is OBDII and probably has PASSKEY ignition interlocks.....there are folks that can hack the computer. Make sure that they can hack the oxygen sensor part that monitors the cats.....when I last looked, not everyone doing ECU mods could do a complete change for a rod......so you had to run multiple O2 sensors. One oxygen feedback sensor is good for mixture control.
I noticed that Painless Wiring has introduced a controller that is a MEFI4 along with the harness.....they dont call it a MEFI4, they have their own name for it. That might be competitive with the GM reprogram, especially if you need to buy a harness.
I have a MEFI3 running on a 350Chev with a MSD throttle body. THe MEFI3 was programmed at Arizona Speed and Marine. It works great with oxygen feedback. The scan tool for a MEFI is much cheaper than the one that I bought for a GM computer.
For the LS6 we are doing, we have looked at the MEFI4, Big Stuff, Accel and a couple of others. Since we are using a 4L65 trans, I wanted a controller that could run the trans also....only Big Stuff does that currently to my knowledge. The engine has stack injection so the stock ECU probably would be a chore to make work.
By the way, are you looking for a relatively "stock" motor or are you going a little further?
Best of luck

Mike,
I am looking at a pretty much stock motor. I will have true dual exhaust without cats. I don't think I will go with headers at this point. I will also have to figure out my air intake. I have a pretty good lead on an 01 Camaro motor and auto trans with just over 9k miles on it. My car is primarily a cruiser. I just want something different that has good performance. If I take it to the track at all, it will just be to a test and tune session to get a number to brag about At least that's the plan for now. I hope to have most of the pieces in place to start tearing things apart sometime after August this year. I hope to be able to have it running by spring or early summer '06.
Take a look at www.speartech.com. From everything I have seen and heard over at ls1tech.com they are very good with the ECUs and harnesses. They can either build them from scratch or modify the stockers, harnesses that is. As I get closer to the swap I will need to decide if I want to fly by wire, have the ECU control my fans and possibly the cruise control. I also am not sure at this point what to do about gauges. I have Dolphin aftermarket gauges now and I don't know if they can be adapted or not.
Thanks!

Stu
I almost forgot....GM makes a computer already programmed for a street rod application. It is sold under part number 12480112 and sells for somewhere around $550......you might check it out vs. paying to have someone program yours......most of the edit programs require a license keyed to the vin in the ECU.....as I recall, the license is $150 for each ECU programmed.....and the guy doing the programming is going to pass that on to you. If i find more info on the 12480112, I will pass it on.....it may be the easiest/least expensive and it plugs into a stock harness.

Ya, I know about the GM Street Rod ECU, but Speartech will reprogram the one I will have for $300 to my specifications. They will also either build a new harness or re-work my stock one for a lot less than the one from GM. Again having it made to my specs. S&P will do the same for similar prices also. I'm more inclined to go with them as I think they may have more experience than GM does with unique applications. No doubt the GM boys and girls have some good experience, heck they designed the thing to begin with, but I bet it is harder to get personal customer service from the techs that have actually done the work. I have not ruled anything out at this point, but that's the way I am leaning.

I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
